Another DIY mod..

Post by easyrider »

This is an easy DIY project if you're sitting around bored with nothing to do. Takes about 15 -20 minutes . This project is making a magnetic dip stick just to see if you have any metallic particles running around in your engine. Yes, you most likely have a magnetic drain plug that serves this purpose but what the hell a little more attraction cant hurt. The picture below should self explain this project. The magnet is neodymium and very strong attracted to the bolt but I supplemented it by using JB weld to make sure it won't come off.As with all projects make sure you follow Honda and service manual requirements

This above modification should not be used with motor running. I believe you can , but the crankshaft may attract it and pull the magnet off that is why I also recommend caution. I have used it with no issues but would not recommend this to anyone since there is a risk associated with it. Just for illustration purposes.

Interesting concept. :geek:

Not to rain on your parade. . .but your idea got me to thinking. . .which for me is something I need to do very carefully. . .measure twice. . .cut once. . .always. . .a Murphy's Law anecdote.

I would prefer to keep the existing dip stick "as-is" and . . .

Go forth and purchase a bar magnet that will fit into the oil filler hole and is longer than the existing dipstick so that it will touch the bottom of the engine and still remain above the neck of the filler hole so you can't lose it. I'll have to measure of course using a lengthy, but small diameter, dowel to see what size would work. And then proceed to do some searching online for a magnet that would be a fit. I also pondered drilling a hole in one end of the magnet and attaching a line to it so I could hang it up on a wall after I use (and clean) it so it won't attract any iron dust from sitting around. ;)

Using a bar magnet that would reach to the bottom would allow a little stirring action to get more exposure and possible attract more particles. Just my guess. . .. :geek:

If I do make one I'll call it the "Bat Magnet".

I like your idea better. There is a risk of the magnet coming off but I can tell you I did this method before and it never came off after years of usage, however I also believe in Murphy's law and if it can happen it will, thats why I would disuade anyone from using the stick on method. Thanks for bringing your idea to the table.. it got lots of us thinking I'm sure..
