An easy way to top up the oil

Post by chicaboo »

Hey kids,

After 1500km of ownership (yep, I only ride on weekends and also had a couple months off...) it was time to top the oil up on the scoot.

I bought 1L of Penrite semi synth 10W30 from Repco for $12aud, which I can also use for top ups in the VZR (not that it goes through oil).
And when I got home I realised my funnel is too big for the PCX. Then I remembered I had a Tom Thumb pump for doing transmission fluids.
Luckily, most oil bottles have a standard cap with the same thread, so the Tom Thumb pump just turned right onto my oil bottle without fuss.
I wasted a couple squirts of fresh oil to rinse out the pump and then proceeded to incrementally top up the oil until it was at the top of the mark.
It seems to have only taken about 50mL of oil to bring it up to level, but even with that the idle seemed smoother. Or is that just my imagination?

Anyhow, I know when using a 1L bottle with the correct sized funnel and no exhaust in the way, this is all just "cool story bro" to most people.
But, you can use the Tom Thumb pump on 4/5L oil bottles or with it's own bottle depending on what you want. My TT bottle was full of tranny fluid.
You can buy these pumps without bottles and do what I did, or just solely use one with it's own bottle for your scooter to avoid oil contamination.
I've seen these pumps with different style nozzles from other manufacturers, so depending where you are in the world, the will likely differ slightly.

I've got a larger version of this kind of thing to remove the oil. Makes oil changes much easier.

I use an oil syringe. Put in 18 oz or so, then 2 ounces in with the syringe, check the stick, another 2 ounces, check the stick ......until it's mid stick..... the bike has a stahlbus oil drain valve on it to drain oil.....so simple.

I reckon some tube stretched onto the bottom of the Tom Thumb pump could be used for removing excess oil or better reaching the bottom of an oil bottle.

I thought about using a syringe, but you need one for each application to avoid contamination. The only syringe I have is used for coolant.
The Stahlbus valve looks nifty if you're changing oil more often or worried about spills.

Don't mention it. :)

Next weekend I'll probably install the WirusWin hyper valve to reduce crankcase pressure. I wonder if that will put some oil in my airbox over time?

Explain this stmt:

"I thought about using a syringe, but you need one for each application to avoid contamination. The only syringe I have is used for coolant."

What contamination? Do You mean if you use a syringe for pulling it out as well as refilling?

If you're only ever extracting fluids I guess it doesn't matter. But in the above example I was referring to filing.
Where you can rinse out coolant, you can't with oil. So once you've used your pump or syringe for oil, that's that.

Ok, my syringe is only used for adding oil, in my car and bike, all of $6 on amazon.

Let all the old oil drain out and then rinse any left-over muck (very small amount) with hot water and dry with a cloth or leave to dry - easy. Nice clean funnel and plastic tubing :)

I just use a funnel.

Extracting, the PCX is too low for my oil pan. I take a 1 gallon milk jug and cut it in half (after drinking the milk first, of course :P ), then slide it under and drain from the drain plug. Remove / clean the oil screen, reinstall drain plug and screen. Fill with oil using a funnel. Easy!
