The crankcase "sight glasses" are really the way to go on motorcycles and scooters IMHO. It not only allows one to note the oil level but also examine the general appearance of the oil to see if it's looking ugly or is getting any water contamination (streaks of light color) from too many brief startups or not allowing the engine to run long enough to get up to operating temperature and let evaporation do it's thing.

I like that eye portal GN! It does make you wonder why we have dip sticks at all. Perhaps since they have to drill an oil fill hole anyway a second one for an eye would put the bike out of my price range

That concept reminds me of a fuel oil level gauge for a 275 gallon tank. It would probably work as long as the flotation device would drive the indicator bar vertically with no hang ups.

At $14.95 it would probably sell with a ton of reviews and 4 out of 5 stars.

It seems like a more fail-safe gadget than an electric readout product. And if it sticks you can always try putting the PCX up and down on the center stand a few times to jog it loose.

I think a couple things would aid in fail safe operation... engine vibration and the fact its saturated in oil I would love to make one but don't have the equipment. Fun to think about and it would boil down design overkill for a functional solution plus be very affordable. One of you boys go run with that and send me a prototype please I would think the float would give you the most trouble. It needs to connect to the push rod and must be made of a buoyant material that does not degrade from heat or petroleum. If hollow be sealed around the core and still make the connection to the rod. If solid still be buoyant. I can't yet see the float design in my minds eye.

If it's a "top read" gauge then a spiral type contraption that would rotate as the float rises or sinks would be required. I think I've seen lawn mowers that have this type of gauge in gas tanks.

If it's a "side read" or "section view" gauge then it could just be a float that's hard mounted to the indicator bar or rod in the appropriate location.

Two challenges either way are going to be keeping the gauge mechanically sealed and eliminating any interference in the range of movement.
