Torn On Purchase

Post by WKYRIDER »

A few months ago I did all my research and narrowed down to the PCX or the SMAX. I decided the PCX was the way to go. Now that spring is here and I'll be able to sell my current scooter I started shopping around for a PCX. Of course I've run into an issue... I found a 2018 PCX with 3,300 miles for $2,500 and a 2018 SMAX with 300 miles for $2,500 at a dealer. Looking at mileage alone the SMAX sounds like the one to jump on. Anyone able to talk me out of the SMAX?

You don't really want us to, do you?
Both healthy looking? No panel damage or accident history.
Only one brand rates higher in quality than Honda...

Happy Yamahaing!

Get test rides on them and buy the one you enjoy riding most.

The PCX and SMax are both great scooters made by great companies. 8)

Comfort will be key. See which one fits you better. Also the leg room is important.

I owned a PCX and really liked it. That said the seat wasn't as comfortable as I thought it would be. It just never really "broke in" and changed configuration. Also Honda puts the horn button and turn signal switch opposite to what most motorcycle/scooter manufacturers do. The horn button is where the turn signal switch usually is and vice versa. Having ridden for 50 years it was hard for me to get used to that. . .kept hitting the horn when I wanted to signal a turn. I tried to adjust and adapt but at the end of the day the seat was the main reason I ended up trading in the PCX for a new Yamaha Zuma 125. I wanted to be able to ride a scooter that could do both street and moderate "off road" trails.

That said I seriously considered the SMax at the time but I considered it strictly a street machine. The first thing I noticed about the SMax though was how comfortable the seat was . . . at least for me. The way it's configured you'll either fit right into it comfortably or if you're taller you may find it restrictive. The leg room is OK . . . not generous but ample.

The headlights, especially high beam, are good at night on the SMax considering they aren't LED. The newer LED model PCXs have really great lighting at night that gives you a bright view ahead.

Again they are both great machines. Gator Greg on this forum did some videos a few months ago on his new SMax and he really liked it and it hauled.

I don't think you can go wrong either way but just make sure it "feels right" for ergonomics and use of features.

Also buying a used machine vs new is always a throw of the dice. You can get some great deals used. But new has warranty and buyer protection . . . at least for a while.

A lot of folks on this forum can help you with "how to" maintenance questions dealing with the PCX. It is labor intensive with all the panels to remove etc. . .. But as others have said once you've done it the second time is easier.

Up to you. Good luck!

It's always exciting getting a new scooter or motorcycle. :D

Because half the tabs have snapped off and there's less screws to undo because you lost them....

Just curious about why you'd decided on the PCX previously?

well, i decided on the SMAX. bought it today and road it home. only road a few miles before the rain started, so havent really been able to test it ouch much. very happy with the power, speed, and handling thus far. I hate to do it, but now i need to find a SMAX forum. Google didnt return anything. Anyone know if there is a good forum like this one for the SMAX?

Congratulations on your new SMax. Take your time getting used to it and it's features. Nice machine. Did you get a black one?

No reason why you can't stay in the loop here . . .. Up to you.

Adventure Rider is a another good forum as well. https://advrider.com/f/threads/yamaha-x ... d.1005540/

A lot of us ride different marques and may at one time have had a PCX or may want a PCX or may want/have a larger Honda product like a Forza or something.

It's all about the scooter/motorcycle culture. Others can chime in here as well . . . I'm just a voice in the wilderness.

Enjoy the miles of smiles. That thing will surely make you grin. . .. :D
