Horn too sensitive - haven't indicated in weeks...

Post by bugaboo »

Hello,

Took delivery of my new 2019 PCX about 4-5 weeks ago. I haven't indicated since.

Let me explain - I have the Tucano Urbano muffs, like below:
https://motocard.s3.amazonaws.com/produ ... xlarge.jpg

The left-hand muff has the thumb section going over this bit of the steering controls:
https://www.honda.co.uk/content/dam/cen ... ons/c2.jpg

Every time I try to reach, not even get to the indicator switch, I just sound the horn, which is embarrassing and quite off-putting.
So if I get to a junction and my muscle memory wants to indicate the director of my travel, I just beep at traffic which just makes me look like a jerk.

I have been riding for a lot of years and don't want to get used to not indicating, so I must find a solution - maybe you can help, please!

My thoughts so far:

* I don;t want to get rid of the muffs - the weather is cold in the morning and I enjoy the protection.
* I thought about moulding some sugru (https://sugru.com/) around the indicator switch and make it longer, but this would work for indicating right only, as I have to push it. For indicating left it would be much more difficult as I would have to grab it from the right.
* I though about deactivating the horn - not really keen as I do use it for dreamy pedestrians that find themselves in the middle of the road when it's red, and generally for other road users, just to let them know I'm there.
* I tried bending the neoprene of the muffs around the horn button - it inevitably comes back to it's original shape (that's why I paid fr it, amiright?)

The horn is too damn sensitive! The lightest touch and away it goes!

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Ride safe!
If you press the pedestrian crossing button, go on red anyway & make everyone wait in front of an open road - may you poo a random sized cactus everyday.

It isn't really that the horn is too sensitive. You have found a design flaw that many of us complain about. The horn switch is in the wrong place! Even without muffs many of us have the same problem. We want to press the horn and our thumb ends up on the turn signal. We want to use the turn signal and our thumbs ends up on the horn.

Even after riding my PCX for 5 years now, I have to look down to find the correct button. None of my other previous bikes were set up like this.

I see, never thought about it like that! o_O

Crazy idea - how difficult would it be to change the assignment of buttons? :ugeek:

For example:

The horn - indicate Left
Hazards - indicate Right
Turn signal Right - Horn
Turn Signal Left - Hazards

Would it be just a case of changing the wires in a plug/connector? Someone with a good understanding of a wring diagram could help maybe?!

Think you would make your bike illegal, construction and use act etc, I find the horn position completely wrong as well, think in Asia the horn is the major component used perhaps. The only suggestion I can come up with is to obtain a complete switch/handle assembly from another make, if you can find one that fits, maybe the Yamaha N max,you might have to use different connectors, but at least the switches would be marked correctly.

I think you're right @cnikonpete. Seems too much hassle & potentially illegal.
I might end up just shaving the bare end of a match and jamming it between the horn button & the housing.

Will report on further findings.

Most people have no problem with Honda's revised button layout, I can swap between bikes and hit the correct button every time.

I can use the indicators ok,the horn button is in a different position to all my previous Jap bikes including many Hondas going back to the 70’s,so still have to make a conscious decision when using the horn. Think the OP is more affected because his handlebar muffs make it harder to avoid the horn.

I was out on my bike a couple of days ago and had to use my horn. Guess what? Turn signals don't beep! In an emergency situation I would LIKE to hit the horn, not the turn signal!

I think it was Homie who came out with a solution that works for the factory horn. Unfortunately it does not work for my air horn, so I am going to try to to find a way to get it to work with it. If I succeed I will you know.

Well, Our weather is improving aside from all that pollen, so I think Spring is here. I even had to cut my lawn again. That was a quick winter.

Unfortunately, I don't think I will be riding for a little longer. I had to rush my wife to the ER yesterday, so she is in the hospital now. At her doctor's office they did some blood tests and her platelet count was zero. Huh?? Average is about 10,000 or so. So the doctor sent her to another office to make sure their machine wasn't messed up. Still zero. Took her to ER. They ran tests and came back with 2. Now they are trying to figure out what is going on. Meanwhile they have given her two bags of I don't know what, but it reminds me of cooking fat. Ugh. Maybe that is what a bunch of platelets look like. They other tests they have to do still like a CT scan to make sure she isn't bleeding in her brain. All I can do is have a positive outlook. (She has HORRIBLE insurance, so I don't even want to think about the costs right now.)

Meanwhile, I have to take care of our sick dogs. I don't know how she takes care of them so I am winging it.

If you lived in a civilised country cost wouldn't even cross your mind.

What a despicable comment to someone in such a situation. Arrogant as usual and totally uncalled for.

Latest update: They found out that she is having a severe reaction to the new thyroid medication they recently put her on (Amour). Her body saw this as an invasion and started killing itself off, just like cancer does. They have not only given her quite a bit more plasma and platelet "stuff", but they have also started her on steroids, antibiotics and other stuff to try to get her platelet count back up to 30,000 and flush the bad stuff out of her. Minimum for her treatment is 4 days in the hospital.

The doctors said that she couldn't have gone another day if she hadn't insisted on seeing one of her doctor's immediately. Because of her insurance, some of her doctor's can no longer see her, so she had to call new doctor's on her list. They were full because of a strep outbreak. She ended up calling one of her specialists to whom she described what was going on. Luckily they were concerned enough to tell her to come in and they would work her in.

This is how "good" her insurance is: the deductable (Her part of the bill) before they will cover anything is $6,800 per year, like we have that just sitting in our checking account! Hospital admission, she pays 50%, 25% of that UP FRONT.

Remember, she had to quit work so that we could qualify for financial help paying for my leukemia medication. We cant own a home or have any assets that can be considered available to be used to pay for it ($8,000/month).

Well, at least she is alive. We can worry about the rest once she comes home...I hope tomorrow.
