have a thought for what's going on behind you

Post by flyingzonker »

Out riding this morning I came upon an accident scene. I couldn't stop because of the traffic but I got a good look at the front end of the car that played havoc on the car you see below. It was a car about the size of a Hyundai Accent. Its front end was completely demolished as far as the windshield. the guy must have hit the car below doing at least 60. He is probably dead now or wishng he were. After I did my shopping and was coming back I was able to pull over and park. I grabbed one of my cameras...I've always got at least one superzoom camera with me wherever I go--and took this pic of the victim, the culprit had already been hauled away: (I hope the pic shows up here)

Dang, that was some hit! I would guess that the driver in that car got a mean whiplash injury.

Relief
At first sight, I thought you were involved Fly :| Thank God...Not.
But I surely feel bad for the victim and families. Always "our worst nightmare." We must must be alert at all times whilst operating Any vehicle. And Use those mirrors folks, keep yer eyes busy. Danger is present, find it, avoid it.

2yous and those that remember,
Yes, the Ford Pinto right along with the Blazing Pontiac Fiero (that I almost signed papers for back in the late eighties). O....my God! Glad I read warnings in the newspaper prior to committing.

Yes, I remember those well. The early ones with the 2L engine hauled. Then with the emissions regulations around '73 they detuned them and they were a slug. My Dad had a '73 Pinto Wagon and I put a fair amount of miles on it in all kinds of weather. No exploding gas tank scene fortunately. . ..

Maybe it's me but I've noticed more unruly tailgaters lately. And these aren't folks with hopped up cars or gear heads. . .they are just ignorant stupid people in a rush and no sense of reaction time and braking distance. They often learn the er of their ways at the expense of others. Sometimes it seems that the bigger and more expensive their SUV is the more entitled they feel and the road is "their's" to have and behold with priority.

When I see somebody traveling too close for comfort while driving my car I put my hand up to my rear view mirror (as if to adjust it) and keep it there which gives them the impression I'm aware of their presence. I still focus on the road ahead of me but having that arm up to the mirror has about a 2 out of 3 success rate for me getting the tailgaters to drop back and give me some distance. They probably don't know what to think but hopefully they think they are making me uncomfortable and not being a good driver putting safety first. ;)

At the end of the day, and as I've mentioned before, no matter how fast or how far we drive we still go around in circles as the world turns. :geek: 8)

Around here tailgaters are common. When they have accidents they REALLY have them. Recently a tailgate hit the car in front of them so hard that it ended up in oncoming traffic, which should have been stopped already, but wasn't. That poor car got broadsided and flipped over. The fire department had to pry the lady out of her car.

I loved driving my double cab, full 8' bed, Chevy truck with the State plates around town. For 30 years I poked along doing the speed limit, or slightly less. Daring somebody to rear end a county vehicle.
On the scooter commute home - it was a different story.

I have been able to ascertain, from the newspaper, that there were injuries in this accident but that the extent of them was not known yet. I find it hard to believe that the offending driver came out of the wreck alive. The guy/gal in front, probably just had a broken neck....

Well, on a scooter you have to be constantly aware of what is behind you and as much as you can just stay in a lane that is empty in back. When you are coming to an intersection is a critical time in this context. If the light is yellow and there is someone behind you best bet is to keep moving, provided the lateral traffic allows.

Tbh its just a post car accident picture. We dont know what happened before or after. You can summise if you want to but it wont have any bearing on what actually happened.

I'm just amazed that the crumple zone worked so well. Impact safety just gets better and better.

I noticed that! Amazing how well the rear end took the blow (that we didn't See and Don't Know More about). Cheers Ford

Thanks!

Yeah. . .those are a bummer to have while driving. Sort of makes me think of the movie about Chess Records where Leonard passed away at the end behind the wheel of his Caddy. :(
