Some interesting facts about air filters

I recently posted a photo of a mod I had made to the stock PCX air filter--2013 model. It attracted some good information from some members but very little approbation from anyone. I don't want to defend the quality of my workmanship in this project, it was sloppy and needs to be cleaned up. That being said, I can't help feeling that the basic idea is sound and the piece itself is salvable.
I think if people will read this really well done article they will, I hope, see that there is a certain method behind the madness of replacing paper with foam. But, leaving my project and its justification aside, the info in this article is something that should be in every PCXer's brainbox--seems to me. Please read, at least as much as you can. I think you will not be sorry.

I've used unifilters (foam) in the past with great results. They do however use a propriatory foam media that you oil and clean periodically, there are no gaps or differing densities in the foam layer and they are custom made for the vehicle/throttle body/carburettor intended. Personally I find D.I.Y'ing such a project is hardly worth the effort in view of the cost. Air filters are cheap, even the K&N is under $50 and lasts a lifetime if cleaned and oiled infrequently.

Is the esp '13 filter the same as used on the '14 led models? Most sites suggest the older '13 filters are not compatible?

I compared '12 150, '13 125 '15 125 and SIMOTA eSp filters side-by side (long story, i have an extra 150 complete airbox to be used with the big bore kit install) There is one small difference on the back of the 15 filter (i guess ro avoid a certain resonating spot on the plastic part if the filter, but all are interchangeable with each other without modification.
Will post up pictures once I get to a computer, but I'm positive that all esp models can use the same filter.

I know the filter element for PCX is easy to find for about 15$--I think the business of 5.56$ is a marketing stunt--you will probably find that they make up the shortfall in postage--maybe not. Anyway, paper or foam or fiberglass, or steel, it is good to know, in the context of the PCX, whether there is a hierarchy in these options. Is there one? Depends...

Thanks! From pictures I could find it was hard to spot differences and I need to order one at some point, but the part No: and sites suggested '13's were not compatible and '15's were not for sale (I guess I checked too soon into '15 release and it was silly to stock them). As you say it may be the tiniest change.

The difference marked with green on the picture.
