Brake fluid change question

Post by Mike888 »

Hi, I recently changed my brake fluid on my Honda pcx 125 year 2011. Is it normal to see very very tiny bubble. You need to spray a flashlight and look up real close to see it. When you look from the handle bar to the brake fluid you can't see it. Also when I removed the tube used to drain there was a burst of brake fluid and got on my brakes. Can rinsing the part with water help and also I waxed it after the reservoir and the bottom. Also how do you know if your nut is tight enough. Thanks for your help

There was no loss in brake pressure.

Is the bubble in the little window in the brake fluid reservoir? If so, that's not a problem.

Brake fluid should be cleaned off with brake cleaner. Water won't be effective. Probably best not to ride it until you have cleaned the fluid off as the brake will be poor and you will contaminate the pads.

It's when I drain it. The bubble look like a single dust. Very very very small

I checked the brake nipple to see if it leaked. I see that there is small amount of oil coming from the nipple thread. Do you think I got water inside when I sprayed water at the nipple. What are signs water got into brake line and also how do you fix water that got into brake line. Thanks

I'm confused, is the air coming out of the master cylinder (out of the holes in the bottom of the reservoir) or is it coming out of the tube when you're running fluid through the system with the bleeder nipple open?

It's coming from the tube. Also I didn't tighten the nipple enough and it started to leak very little at the thread of the screw. I thought it was tight and sprayed they brake pad and wheel with water to prevent corrosion. Do you think water might have got in. Also what are signs water got in and what should I do.

If your brakes are ok it's ok. Don't worry about it ar allow the heaving masses to help you worry more.

But I'm now having an issue where the the nipple screw thread is leaking very small amount of brake fluid. When I look at it, it doesn't like it's over like an hour you will see brake fluid on the plastic that covers the nipple. I tighten it and still no help. I did observe that when you put the cap in over the nipple, it will cause the brake fluid to come out from the thread of the nipple that connects to the caliber

Watch my how to video. A small amount of air will go into the tube, but it's not coming from the caliper. The seal between the tube and bleeder nipple is imperfect and that's where the bubbles are coming from. Make sure the bleeder nipple is snugged tight and it should not leak, though there may be some residual around it from the bleeding process. Use a wet cloth or even some brake cleaner on a cloth to wipe up any brake fluid that spilled. Avoid getting brake cleaner on rubber bits.

Two possibilities. #1, it may not be snugged tightly enough. If that is so, use a torque wrench to tighten it to the specs in the service manual (I think it's 7 ft lb, but I can't recall for certain, I know it's not much)

#2, you may have accidentally over-torqued the bleeder screw, inadvertently damaging it, in which case it should be replaced. They're not all that costly.

Im sure it is possibility 2. How do I switch out the bleeder nipple. I'm worried brake fluid would come flying out

Well, that's kinda what will happen if you just unscrew the thing, yes. But if you control it, that won't happen. You have to drain the system and refill it once the new bleeder screw is in place. This will require you to bleed the air out of the brake system, which is easy enough, it just takes a bit of time and patience.

I have a question how do I release all the fluid. Is this the correct step to bleeding my brake line. I pump the right hand side brake and I hold while loosening the nipple. After I tighten the nipple and pump again. Procedure goes over and over until the fluid has no bubbles. Am I correct?

Also when I pump the brake on scooter there is no leak. The only time there is leak is when I turn the wheel to the right over night. Is the scooter rideable. I have ordered the part but it will come next friday

Draining the system is easy. Take the cover and gasket off the reservoir. Take note of the fluid level. Turn the handlebars to the left soothe master cylinder is at a slant. Put the drain tube on the nipple, crack it open and let gravity do its thing. You can pump the brakes to help it along if you want it to go faster.

So long as the old brake bleeder screw isn't cross threaded, you should be able to introduce the new one.

When bleeding the brakes, tilt the handlebars to the left so the master cylinder is at an angle, allowing gravity to assist. Fill the reservoir And watch the bubbles come out. Do not open the bleeder screw yet. You can squeeze the brake lever very slightly (less than a quarter inch really) repeatedly, at times with a quick "snap". Tap and wiggle the brake line gently to encourage any air to move upward. After a while, you will want to crack open the bleeder screw a little, pump the brake lever once or twice, then close it again. Return to the previous process. Continue doing these things until pressure returns to the brake lever and bubbles no longer come out of the master cylinder.

When done, snug the bleeder screw closed, remove the tubing, replace the cap on the reservoir, and the screws of course. Wipe up any fluid that may have spilled with a wet cloth. Water will neutralize the fluid.

Anyway, it's easier to demonstrate than to explain in text.

Are you certain it's leaking and not just residual fluid?
