Whale Watching Boat Sinks By Vancouver Island

Anyone hear what made it sink in calm waters?

It is the third sinking in 2-3 months the other two being a tug and a fishing boat.

It is not called the Cruel Sea for no reason? Or the other one being "Stranger things happen at sea"

When I saw the picture of the boat capsized I showed it to the wife because we were on a boat that looked just like it whale watching with our kids about 50 miles up the peninsula from Seward, Alaska. The gang was a bit sea sick but I never gave a thought to the boat sinking (and maybe a killer whale having us for lunch?). We had a chicken strips box lunch and the crew kept saying they were really the Puffins that were all over the cliffs of the islands.

When I saw the headline, I thought another boat sunk from Syria. And it's not to devalue the lives lost in the tragedy in the conflict area but you wonder how 5-6 lives were lost in a first world country with strict marine safety regulations?

I know most people often do not wear life jackets on boats, but saying that they'll grab a life jacket in case of an emergency is like saying they'll put on their seatbelt before they get into an accident.

We also went to one of the glaciers on the same ride and watched the ice cliffs sheer off into the water. It was an all day ride. Even in July that water was frigid and very unforgiving. It brings new meaning when we put on the Deadliest Catch on TV occasionally and watch those guys fighting the ice. I don't care what they pay it's crazy.

Thanks for responding, I think about all of the rough boat rides we have been on like between Maui and Molokai, Hawaii when the boat was being tossed around like a rag doll and everyone was sick or on Black Sturgeon Lake north of Kenora, ON when bad weather came up many times over the years. Basically, we spent half of our time on large lakes on most vacations and never had an issue ourselves but heard of a few tragedies nearby when storms came up. Some of the boats we went on in Alaska looked a bit rickety and one airplane.

I would think by now they would have some idea why it capsized. It appears it was very close to some rocks near the surface.
