Break in period

Post by Kompact »

How many km should I put on the bike before I can switch to synthetic oil? Been a while since I broke in a new ride (been buying used for my last few). It's about 2500km (1500 miles) right?

Just did an oil change at 900km using 10/30 Honda dino oil. IIRC I should run that till about 2500km and then I'm good to switch over to synthetic - do I have that right?

How long do you plan keeping it, how many miles do you expect to ride it in that time?
Chances are you'll sell it on long before any benefits from synthetic will be apparent.
Just stick with the service schedule in the owner's manual and use the cheapest 10w30 oil you can find.
Four decades on two wheels has taught me nothing, all advice given is guaranteed to be wrong

New engines are built to closer specs these days, you can switch immeidiately if you want. I drained the oil at 100 miles of my new PCX and filled with valvoline synthetic.

Maybe use a little better quality of lubricant.

You can use synthetic whenever you want. Many motor companies ship their motors with synthetic oil from the factory. The main reason ALL aren't filled that way is expense. It has nothing to do with break-in. Use conventional or synthetic at your preference.
