Only front brake uses brake fluid. It is very hard to see the level even with a light. Back brake uses the cable so it will work even if it is empty.

The CBS uses brake fluid to drive the centre front piston, it is a seperate reservoir to the handle bar mounted one and is hard to see - best shine a light into it when rotating the handle bars or rocking the bike slightly. It does need fluid to work and has a lower limit! The rear brake lever operates the rear brake, the front left and right levers operate the three front hydralic pistons.

Check your front brake pads, brake fluid doesn't evaporate and if there's a leak it should've been empty by now because of the pressure.

My guess is that your brake pads are already worn. Your front brakes has a third piston that works when you apply the rear brakes to produce the link brake effect, a low level fluid means your pads are already worn out and the third piston is already extending a little bit.

But he says the top fluid level is good, so that should mean the front pads are ok and the question was regarding not seeing any fluid in the CBS reservoir - which is a pain to check as it's difficult to see in the tiny window. When my main reservoir level went down, yes, the front pads were worn.

You're right, I read it again and he said it "looks empty" but he's not sure it is indeed empty.

Left lever works both rear wheel brake by cable and front brake by hydraulic fluid.
That's why its called "Combined" because it operates braking on both wheels.
The CBS fluid check window looks empty when full.
With the scooter upright on the centre stand you need to shine a light on the fluid check window and shake the scooter, you should now see the fluid level at the very top of the window.

The cable is unaffected by fluid level.

Wait a second...

I thought the RIGHT lever worked both front and rear brakes,
While the LEFT lever worked rear only.

???

Nope - LEFT is front and Right is CBS. Its is made to be confusing by the way they label the levers in the manual:

Yup - this is correct. The right brake lever is the rear brake lever and operates the CBS.

Right operates front and rear.

Left is rear only

And it still would not let me get it right. Not enough coffee yet!

To get it right once and for all the LEFT is the CBS (Rear and Front) and the RIGHT is the FRONT brake only. What GN2 originally said.

The first page(s) you show say that left is rear, right is CBS... which made the most sense, theoretically, because the entire purpose of CBS was so that someone couldn't lock up the front brake by itself, right?? Why would CBS be applied to the rear brake, where that brake (especially a drum rear) would never lock up anyway??

However, that last picture does seem to be more accurate, based on what I feel while riding. Right brake definitely works pretty good for trail braking.... But it just blows my mind that the entire concept behind CBS isn't to prevent ANY wheel from locking up, but to add more bite to the rear drum for a n00b squeezing left brake only in a panic. Learn something new every day!

The idea behind CBS is to help prevent front wheel lock-ups.
You can pull the CBS lever on a PCX as hard as you can and the front wheel doesn't lock.

For avoidance of doubt and hopefully to clear this up once and for all....

LEFT LEVER = COMBINED FRONT & REAR BRAKING

RIGHT LEVER = FRONT BRAKING ONLY

Anyone who says different is either a wankpuffin or a bunglecunt

What size O Ring do I use for replacing the OEM when changing the oil. Oil plug and Screen if they are 2 different sizes.

Your first sentence doesn't match the reality that you could pull the right lever as hard as possible and lockup the front wheel!!

I was actually searching for something that and ran across this passage with image of an old and new CBS system. I'm not sure if this is old and new for PCX only or just old and new amongst Honda designs in general, but check it (dunno how to upload pics to forum yet, but maybe someone else could help out).....

The OP has a 2016, so it is as I show in my last picture, with the reservoir. I also checked in the service manual and it has been that way since the 2013 model.
