Hurricane close up-the real deal !
This video was taken from my bedroom window several years ago when Hurricane Wilma blew through West Palm Beach, Florida. The eye came right over my house and was a beautiful quiet respite then the backside hit..

That would be a lovely day in Yorkshire. Brisk. Dog might not want to go for a walk but it's a bit soft.
Man up FFS.

For those who have never been in a hurricane, don't. .if at all possible. I have been through 5, but that was because it was my job. It is heartbreaking to see the destruction and loss of life... and then there are the ego driven survivors who think their previous status still applies when it comes to food, water, and gas. Disasters bring out the worst and the best.

Hurricane Matthew happened. It tore through Haiti and the Bahamas, and then ran up the coast of Florida and Georgia. Now it is running up the coast of the Carolinas. It was a Category 4 when it started. Now it is a Category 1 Hurricane. At Category 4 stage the winds are 140 mph with tall waves and heavy rain. Flooding is a given. The hurricane itself is only traveling at around 14 mph, so it has plenty of time to do plenty of damage.

Re: Hurricane close up-the real deal !
It's through here.
We got around 4 1/2 to 5 inches of rain and a lot of wind that knocked over trees onto the power lines and took out our power for most of the day. But nothing tragic.
We still have a lot of folks here that were evacuated from the coast. (The coastal cities saw a lot more flooding and wind damage.)

I was there (Philippines) a few years ago after the disastrous one as a volunteer of Engineers without frontiers to provide a pop-up network solution. It was a very strong trip emotionally.
The fact that my home country is land locked - about 400 miles from the closest sea - saves us from these type of disasters.
Hope you guys stay safe and out of harms way.

That there is some spooky footage of forceful winds and rain going parallel to the ground. I hear the lady with fear in her voice. Your wife?
Easyrider, Itsa crap shoot living in Florida, ain't that right?
You gamble with the possibility of living inside a storm full of Hell for the sake of Family, Sun, Fun, Warmth and its Beauty (oh...and things Are a-Heck-of-a-lot-cheaper there too!!)
I had to pack it in after 15 years of on/off weather threats. Oh my nerves! I was at the point of frying them when I decided, "that's it! I gotta go!" Back to NY I went, family is here so alls good with that.
(Snow's my boog-a-boo now. More on that later when the white shite arrives
)
I'm glad my friends in Florida are safe and sound. Their location made the difference (this time). I'm very glad you're okay too and that your video and still photo posted was.....from "the past!"
Be safe always, WN

Re: Hurricane close up-the real deal !
Part of it was, but mostly my neighbor . That was just a snippet video, the storm got much worse and no time to film ..It was interesting to see the winds change after the eye passed over. You could actually see blue skies and a quiet 30 minutes or so, then it got dark and the winds came back this time from the opposite direction. If you have newer home (concrete block) and on high ground most will be OK, but if not, get the hell out of Dodge. I have seen roofs peal off and cars tumbling end over end in Andrew.flyingzonker wrote:What was the wreckage in the photo? Nothing of yours I hope.

Re: Hurricane close up-the real deal !
In one of the hurricanes I was, in the water table underground shifted so much that houses started sinking. It isn't fun to come home to downed trees and power lines, and no drinkable water or way to cook your food. But it is made even worse when you finally reach your house only to see that it is leaning and you are going to be at the bottom of the list when it comes to insurance claims because the structure itself is not compromised. In that particular subdivision my house was the only one in which they drove pilings into the ground to make sure it was stable. Every other house in the subdivision was either leaning or split in half. In the end, after much investigation by the county building inspectors it was found that the original builder, 30 years prior to the hurricane, had chopped down the trees but did not pull up the tree stumps. He just brought in a lot of fill dirt and paid off an inspector. Oh the lovely politics in the South (Southern states of the United States)! There is no shame here. In fact, when I was stationed in New Orleans back in the 1970's two crooked politicians were running against each other and one of them's platform was, and I quote,"I may be crooked, but not as crooked as he is!" It makes buying a home here a matter of guess work.

Re: Hurricane close up-the real deal !
It wasn't Betty Davis Eyes!
It was Hurricane Gloria's "Eye" that came over Long Island on Sept 27 1985. She was a Cat 4 but crossed over us I believe, as a Cat 2. That was plenty enough!!
Neighbors and I had to quickly build a plywood house for a mama and her puppies (8) that were abandoned across the street. We had been feeding them on the property they were born on for several weeks. When word came of Gloria's soon to be arrival, we gathered materials to build a home on our property. I grabbed some sheets of cut plywood from my attic (not yet fastened down) while neighbors fetched hardware and tools. After the structure was built, (about 4' x 4' x 3') we put plastic over the angled roof. We raised the floor and layed an old blanket on top of it. The entrance was secured so none of them could exit until we removed the panel. We kept their house close to our house.
Gloria arrived, our windows were taped (almost silly, right?), but they were. Winds really picked up. Big willows were toppling down, trees were uprooted, boat covers were airborn and stormdoors were blown off along with house siding as Shingles flew like birds!
Then it got quiet, the sun appeared, the sky was blue, so blue. We thought it was over. Noooo.....We were in The Eye of Gloria!
Have to admit, it was out of this world, one we were told Not to Step foot in!!
But we did and what an experience! We exited our homes and met in the middle of the silence. Did God arrive? "I" certainly wondered that. We were in awe. But it all seemed so momentary...that calmness, that serenity. The clouds appeared once again and the sky grew dark and the winds broke silence. They were now whirling in opposite direction then prior to the Eye. Back inside we went and waited it out. As Gloria rolled away she left us powerless. However, We were all unharmed!! We all joined forces to clean up. The storm brought us all closer together.
The Pups? Black Lab Mama and her 8 Puppies were unscathed too and oh so happy to see us Open their Door! Such Joy! Tails a-wagging and oh so many hugs! From then on Mama and her family had shelter. We found homes for all of them by 8 weeks of age, and Mama was adopted by the couple next door. Success!!
Nature....you'll never get a handle on Her! Full of Surprises. Magical and Mystical. She brings joy, she brings destruction.
Never Doubt Mother Nature and Don't Ever Think You Can Fool Her!
(Funny, I recently sold an Echo Chain Saw that I purchased back then. She cut up, and down many a tree the following days of that unforgettable storm.
Echo....Ha! that sounds funny to me now)
