I get disrespected

Out riding today down a 4 lane interurban street. 30 mile speed limit. I start weaving between lanes to avoid the shitty parts of the pavement--too many bumps makes my back cry out. Finally I come to an intersection--which I am unfamiliar with--and hesitate between the the right lane and the right turn lane to such an extent that I stop between them with the intention to wait til the right turning cars vacate the lane so I can enter it. A guy in an SUV just behind me and to the right side opens his window and says to me: "You shouldn't be riding." I turn, shifting on the seat so I can face him, and give him a cold steady stare. Finally he gestures that I should get in front of him in the turn lane. I do that, make my turn and ride away burning with indignation! "Damn nosy asshole." and such like thoughts alternated with thoughts like,"He was right, you idiot." This alternation went on and on.

Finally I concluded that, on the whole, the guy did me a favor. Still, every once in a while I think again of it and suddenly say to the empty air: "Mind your own fucking business, jerk!" haha

i am a lot older than many of the present generation and it is beginning to show. When i was young and just beginning to learn proper english "disrespected" was not a verb. In fact, there was no such word. Obviously, things change and some of us are left behind. I have to accept that, but it still makes me cringe when I see or hear an improper use of language. To me, that is being lazy.

Just my 2cents: Save nasty words for When You Really Need them! (So I was told by parents as a teen).
Used on a daily basis, they have No Impact on hearing ears.
Think about it. They'll have no meaning.

well, he certainly noticed my weaving and probably conceived a low opinion of my riding skill therefrom. I confess I would have once done the same--but now that I understand the priorities of "mature" riders of bikes with only nominal suspension systems, I think that, presented with a scene similar to the one I was offering to the SUV operator, I would hang fire and keep my mouth shut.

I was only aware of the flavor of the term when I chose it; its grammatical correctness was not an issue. It tasted to me like something out of The Godfather--which may be where I picked it up. It is probably by now an acceptable usage.

I understand your preference for what is called proper English. I don't like sloppy language either, but I will use solecisms occasionally when they seem to carry a point more effectively than any kosher expression would. For instance, I might say, "busted up" instead of "broken", or I might use "who" instead of "whom" even though the word is a direct object, if I feel that "whom" will sound stuffy or "la di da".

Well, I think, in this case, the words were both necessary and sufficient to get across to the reader the mental anguish this SUV loud mouth brought upon me, an innocent PCXer out for what he hoped would be a pleasant ride. That being said, I have to add that I agree: Explicit language is something best used sparingly and among persons the user is sure won't be offended. I can recall several times in my checkered career when bad words got me in deep dutch ( no offence intended to any Netherlanders on board-- my grandfather's nickname was "Dutch".)

I can be as PC as the next guy and in fact I would rather be PC than not. PCness is a kind of social lubricant, no?

I want to add here that I may sound like I am bashing the suv driver, but actually I am getting to be more and more grateful to him. I was out riding today on my bigger scooter and I noticed how conscious I was about keeping one lane except in dire need to get out from behind a world class slow poke.

Jr high? Well, I confess, I was pretty bad in jr high and for a hell of a long time after and well up into the present day. But, as I say, I usually tailor my tongue to the company I keep. When it's all said and done all I can say is: It was Dick Nixon made me do it!

Don't waste time on petty things on the road. Some people are just so full of it, dumping their loads of s*** to anybody they will meet. Makes them feel superior. You made a mistake, so what? Apologize, brush it aside and enjoy the rest of your ride. Be glad your safe.
