Night Scootin 7 - Stranger Danger

Post by honkerman »

It's nice to meet new people, but on a scooter, sometimes strangers are dangerous. Had a few unnerving experiences on this ride, including someone following me, possibly seeking an opportunity for road rage. Freaked me out a bit.

For some reason some folks like to mess with scooters. I was riding the other day and I was actually on a little traveled back rural road. I slowed down to adjust my riding goggles as they were just pinching in the wrong spot. Just barely moving forward as I was fiddling around and there was no traffic in either direction .I was probably in the center of the roadway which is hardly used. Anyway, I could not get the glasses adjusted properly and decided to pull over onto the dirt shoulder to affix repairs to the eyeware strap. Just when I was leaning to pull over to my right a car comes from nowhere and speeds up and passes me on my right. We nearly collided and only was inches away. I had the feeling he was speeding up to graze me anyway as a gesture of fun for him , but when I turned right into his path it was almost the big one. I have no idea why, and in this state it is illegal to pass on the right unless its a dedicated lane. I was on a one lane shared roadway. People are sometimes F..ked up!

I think its more than a feeling, it's the case. Many times I feel contempt from motorists by their actions, accelerations and maneuvers. But more when on scooter than street bike. If I search my soul for the reason I can find it  here it is and give me a break if you don't agree.

If you are a cage driver (who does not ride) you know if you tap a person on a bicycle or motorbike stateside your life can be turned upside down in legal matters. Where-as having a fender bender results in practically nothing with another cage driver. As a scooter rider is perceived non-threatening and harmless, subconsciously you're threatening their lively hood legally. So perhaps, sometimes people are more likely to take it out on the scooter rider.

If you are a cage driver (who does not ride) and you tap a person on a Harley you have a whole second level of concern  and you show a little more respect in the proximity of that twin engine rider.

Just an observation, I get more respect on Shonky than I do on Precious  same person, different bike. This could just all be about mufflers... I'm not a psychiatrist.
