Possible email mining...

Post by Ishkabibble »

Just wanted to post a heads-up to the moderators and forum owner.

From July 7 until yesterday, I have received 121 spam emails from dating sites, "hookup" sites, and porn via my email address.

This is the only website to which I belong that has this email address. I have used it nowhere else. Therefore, somehow, the email list for this board has been mined for addresses.
I found something to put here.

Unaffected by this, must be something else like posted ads or service providers selling email lists to losers.

Not an expert, but it's also possible that someone hacked your service provider for infrequently used addresses. This happened with a couple of mine (at the same time) some months ago.

Thanks for the info. We haven't heard of the same problem from others, but will keep our eyes and ears open.

I understand the pain. I get about 300-400 spam e-mails a day on my work account. Fortunately they get flagged to my junk folder, although I also get legit e-mails in the junk folder if there are too many Bcc addresses. It presents a challenge because I don't have the time to filter the junk folder and some valid e-mails have been lost because I have to do a mass delete at least once a day.

I have had friends who were hacked at public wifi sites, like Starbucks, Publix, Kroger, the library etc. There always has to be some jerk out there that wants to spoil it for the rest of us.

Do you have a smartphone? Sometimes, if you go to certain sites on your smartphone it can release your email address (and phone number).

Nope. 6 messages in my spam folder. All a week or more old and three spoofing FedEx.

I like most people get spam on my personal email and work email - does not mean it has anything to do with this board (forum) which I use daily at home and work. If someone believes a friend of there's is sending them spam email as it has 'fredpcx@yahoo.com' or such, people need to look at the header info and full msg info as it will often have forged (spoofed) entries someone else in the msg body at server level not usually shown in msg content.

Email address used at this forum, and for nothing else. The email on my phone is another provider entirely.

I thought it might be possible that it was some other kind of chicanery, and now that I see that no others are having the same issue, it might be just that provider has been compromised somehow.
