a proposal to bring down traffic fatalities of all types
I propose: Let the licensing requirements be such that no one can legally drive a 4 wheeled vehicle on any sort--let alone a Hummer--before he/she (or is it she/he?) has spent a year riding a motorcycle or some kind of maxi-scooter.

You would have to include 3 wheeled bikes in that since there are some people who can not balance even a bicycle, plus veterans who may have not driven previously and were disabled. Most of all though, you would have to find a way to cover and air condition them for the moms with children who never learned how to drive previously, such as those from New York city or New Jersey. We have lots of those down here in Atlanta.
Currently own:

This is creative thinking, I like it! Fantasy land but that would do it in the long run or maybe so many go off on the bikes early on that the numbers go up.flyingzonker wrote:I propose: Let the licensing requirements be such that no one can legally drive a 4 wheeled vehicle on any sort--let alone a Hummer--before he/she (or is it she/he?) has spent a year riding a motorcycle or some kind of maxi-scooter.
Rather I propose a virtual ride on a motorbike for all at the Driver license application DMV. Lets put the little buggers in a simulator and scare the crap out of them with some highway riding amonst the 18 wheelers. YEA BABY! I want a go at that too! Make the DMV FUN!
new word in there for youyou

Gotta love humor...
How about a more realistic situation, in that a 4 to 6 week defensive driving course be mandatory before the issuance of even a learner's permit?

People drive badly because: 1) Unlike motorcycle and scooter riders, they do not feel powerfully that their lives depend on their driving vigilantly, accurately, courteously (smart riders know better than to gratuitously piss off drivers), and within the law. 2) Most people feel that once you get your license, you have "learned to drive". Not so. Learning to drive is a life long process. You can get better and better and better at it, If people would just approach driving with this lifelong learner approach--wow! what a paradise would our roadways soon become!

Totally agree
Re: a proposal to bring down traffic fatalities of all types
So you have to buy a wrecked 50cc scooter or shitey Chinese 125 and throw it in a skip a year before you can buy a car?
It just won't work.

Four decades on two wheels has taught me nothing, all advice given is guaranteed to be wrong
Re: a proposal to bring down traffic fatalities of all types
At the very least all able bodied motorists should spend some time on a bicycle so they appreciate how vulnerable road users on two wheels are...
