Reflective Rim Tape

Post by Ishkabibble »

Okay, I decided that the first thing I can do as a mod will be to put reflective rim tape on the wheels.

I've found several dozen possibilities on Amazon and Ebay, as well as DHGate, Aliexpress, Identitape, and a few other sites.

Problem is, I have almost no artistic ability or even fashion sense.

I do have the distinct feeling that someday, I am going to swap out the black plastic for white, since we all know that white is faster, but that's in the future.

So, keeping that in mind, what color tape should I put on the wheels?

I would make a poll, but I don't know how, and I'd rather just hear suggestions and see images of the choices of others, if it isn't too much to ask.

Thanks!

I have this product all over my bike except the rims. The deep red will look nice on the black wheels however get 2-3 rolls and be prepared for a learning curve (pun) and some wasted product. The applicator that comes with it won't help you and will most likely hinder your efforts on the perfect curves of your rims. You will need to have a steady free hand style and a good eye for consistent position. I would put it on, spin the wheel and take it off. My option eventually was standard over the counter dual band pin stripe. This was much easier and forgiving to apply and actually looked better than the wider thicker reflective tapes. The product above reflects very well in camera and flash but I have real concerns that any of these reflective products actually preform well on the street under on coming headlights as we have threads proving they don't. You might consider tape and pin stripes for aesthetics and real light accessories for visibility. Just my experience. See the wheels in my video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaqlzTmnlzI

If you clean the rims and then lightly wet them with slightly soapy water, you'll be able to reposition the deals for a while.

But, as Homie suggests, you should still get extras.

Well, if you put white on black rims it will work with either a black or white bike. If you put black on black rims it will only show up at night, so once again it will work with black or white. If you did not change ALL of your panels, you could have a black and white bike. Then everything black or white would match....so the real question is, will the job look good or bad...:-/

I haven't done mine because I think it will not come out looking like some monkey got a hold of tape and stuck it on my bike.

On eBay you can find sellers who will make your reflective rim tape to:
fit two different sized rims
in your specified color
in your specified width
with your bike's official company logo,
a custom logo
in different fonts
various times your wording appears per rim side (2X,3X, 4X)
I did my Forza this way and my son did his CB500X with custom lettered reflective rim tapes.

Black is fun because it disappears in daylight

I actually was thinking of black tape for that very reason.

No one will need to see me in the daylight, right?

I have a source for 3M Engineer Grade reflective in flourescent orange, and that was my other preferred color. I may be able to get it in flourescent yellow, but I'm not sure.

Since the object is to be seen, I may end up going with 3M Solas, which is as reflective as it gets. There is nothing that is more retroreflective.

From my favorite cheap stuff internet store:

http://www.miniinthebox.com/17-strips-3 ... 30978.html

At least some curve is pre-installed.

They also have straight tape: http://www.miniinthebox.com/10m-motorcy ... 16948.html

It will take a while (a fairly long while) to get the goods if you go for the free shipping.
On my scoot, getting there is WAY more than half the fun!

but please, don't delete anybody, no matter how badly they deserve deleting :)
