Whine sound coming from the back left side

Post by pogo007 »

Hi guys,

I just got a used PCX. I am hearing a whine sound on the left side intermittently when idling. I also hear a lot when de accelerating. Is this sound normal? If not what could it be?

Could be a worn bearing.

While it is idling roll the bike backward. If the sound increases it is probably the bearings in the CVT (#18 & #19). Let the service department listen to it if it gets louder.

Is it still under warranty?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies. Honda Recently changed all the bearings on the bike about 3 weeks ago. The sound was there before I got the bearings changed. The same Honda dealer I went to for the bearings they have been telling me this sound is normal. They even showed me with another PCX and Airblade that sounded like mine on acceleration with the whine sound but it did not have the sound on idle. I then went to another Honda dealer and they said the bearings are bad. I told the second Honda dealer that I just got my bearings changed. Could it be related to a air filter problem?

I did some additional testing yesterday with the bike on the center stand. When the wheel is spinning on it's own on the center stand, the idle whine sound doesn't seem to be as loud. When I stop the wheel from spinning the whine sound is louder.

Did you notice any difference pre/post bearing change - are you sure they did it?

Yep I did check while they were doing it. The only difference I've notice is a smoother ride. Other than that, not much difference.

Hi guys,

Here is a link to the audio fil I just created. This is the sound of my PCX on idle. You can hear very clearly.

I'm sorry but that sounds exactly like ours sound when we had the bad clutch bearings. I have to wonder which bearings they fixed. Read this thread and you will note that they had switched out what they thought was the problem bearing only to determine that the sound was still there. Then the tore it down again and found the problem.

I don't know what HONDA has for a maintenance schedule on the driveline , but those needle bearings need periodic greasing. If dirt can get in then grease can go out. My assumption is that a lot of these problems and noises can be resolved by a periodic cleaning and greasing schedule. Maybe every couple thousand miles or so?..not sure what it should be but adequate grease on all those driveline bearings is essential to smooth and quiet operation..

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your help! Just before I go and change that bearing on the clutch I just wanted to let you know I actually got it changed a few months ago. Would it still be possible for it to be defective in such a short time?

Maybe they messed up when they swapped the bearings - is that the noise (scraping sound) you had initially or a different issue to before the bearings were swapped? May be wise to check oil in the final drive.

I have had a whining sound on deceleration since buying my (KF18) 2015 / 150.
I bought it in Jan 2016 with 4,400 kilos (about 2,900 miles) at 10 months old.

At idle there is a slight chirping sound, almost as if the bike has a fan-belt like a car's and it is slipping, but there is no whining sound on idle.
I think it unlikely that the CVT belt is actually slipping - it is unlikely to have been serviced at that low mileage and accidentally greased; it is unlikely to be worn at that low mileage.

By whining sound I mean that it sounds like a jet-engine winding down to a stop.
I do not know whether that is normal for this bike as I have only one of them so I cannot compare it to another.
It does not happen when cruising, accelerating normally or accelerating gently (I do not accelerate hard).

AFAIK there's no mention of any lubrication of these bearings in the service schedule.
Recently I have been pondering purchase of a Peugeot scooter and its service schedule lists a requirement to regularly clean and lubricate the caged needle bearing in the driven pulley.

I do not have a manual for my PCX *2015 *150 yet.
I am reasonably familiar with the CVT on my other scooter - a Suzuki Address 125 - but I am not sure where these caged needle bearings are, or whether the PCX or Address have them. Could you please tell me or link a picture for me as I am keen to know for preventative maintenance.

Thanks a lot.
