Riding on Gravel

Post by honkerman »

Someone asked on my blog how to ride on gravel. Thought I'd share my answer here too in case anyone else is interested.

Gavel, sand, ice, oil, rain, LEAVES, snow, hail, traffic lane paint, rubberized crosswalk & intersection markings, polished concrete, ducks, geese, wind, short skirts and sometimes both :o

All things that put you on my survivors list and mess up a perfectly good scooter. Do you still want to ride one?
HELL YA!

Gravel is an unpredictable surface to ride on. If you are new to riding I would suggest that you be prepared to put out your feet to balance yourself, and keep your speed low. Those of us who have ridden on gravel a lot know how to ride on it, but those who are new to riding need to be very cautious until you have done it many times. Balance is important, and a lower speed is imperative. Turning will require a steady hand and throttle. Keep your eye on the road ahead and in front of you, not on the side or behind. Those following you can take care of themselves on this kind of road. Be prepared to turn to avoid pot holes too. Going through them when you are a new rider could be your downfall, literally.
