First impressions

Post by Simon0867 »

Picked up my PCX 125 yesterday afternoon, took it for a spin around the town and then my short commute this morning.

Positives:

The ride quality is very smooth, what a difference from my old 50cc.
The bigger wheels are a real benefit and seem to soak up the defects on our crappy roads with ease.
The engine oozes power and is very responsive.
Bike starts on the button and idles away happily.
Tried the "idle stop" system which works fine although takes a bit of getting used too !
Switchgear and dash are all excellent.
No issues so far with the tyres although still to try in the wet (it's summer in Scotland so I won't have long to wait)
Mirrors are OK, better than a lot of stock scoot ones but will probably get extenders at some point.

Cons:

The seat isn't great for taller riders like me. Although I have the newer "non-hump" model you still find yourself wedged up against the upstep for the pillion area. I'm 6'2".
I miss my audible indicators, minor point I know but I found them useful.

On the whole very happy with the PCX and looking forward to some longer runs over the next couple of weeks.

I slide down on the seat (mostly wearing waterproofs which I do anyway due to early hours travel and our summer being chilly then) but also wearing jeans - wish the seat was pointed slightly more upwards at the front.

"Chilly" sounds nice. Over 100 all this week and 106 degrees F forecast for this weekend. Cool weather is a distant memory in Dallas in August.

If Honda would WAKE UP and pay attention to the US Market, they'd discover that these bikes would sell like hotcakes if they made a seat that wasn't stupidly tipped forward. I love my PCX150, but HATE the seat. I've already tri3ed (still have) an aftermarket flattish seat from Thailand. Big improvement, but it's not the end. I am working on a better solution.

It is the seat that everyone should experience before they buy a PCX. I still ride the stock seat and have found it forces you to sit up straight which makes you look like a putz... but is probably good for your posture in the end.

Hey, we ride a SCOOTER. We already look like a putz to 99% of the population.

Id disagree to an extent on the putz comment,

As the PCX looks so different head on to most other scooters, I have some big bike riders tipping their head down to have a look as they go past, as they are wondering what it is.

I think the only thing that lets the PCX down on the looks front is how skinny the front tyre is in all honesty.

The tyre width is a fashion thing.
Current tyres are ridiculous widths, far more rubber is used in construction than is necessary.
Back in the 80s there was a little bike known as Elsie and she had lots of sisters, all called Elsie.
The Elsies had their own race series and people would come far and wide to see them race.
Here's a video of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDo1UQqYPqI
The race series was contested on standard Dunlop TT100 K181 tyres, the front was 3.6 inches wide, which is the same width as the front on a PCX.
Trust me, PCX tyres are plenty wide enough.
Four decades on two wheels has taught me nothing, all advice given is guaranteed to be wrong

Ok I guess but my rims got black fast from London roads - unlike most of the rest of the bike I've never washed them. Power washing seems to work well, but it seems bad for the brakes so not bothered.
