Planning on getting a PCX

Post by RGW68 »

Hello PCXers, I don't have a PCX yet, but the plan is to get one in the next couple months. :) I plan on doing alot of riding as it will be my only mode of transportation. Any help regarding the equipment I should get (Hi-viz, helmet, jacket and anything else that a newbe should know)?

Thanks to all that reply :)

1) Take a motorcycle safety course, if one is offered in Canada. I don't know if it will help on insurance, but it will certainly help getting the motorcycle qualification for your driver's licence. You also might learn some stuff, especially things to watch out for on the road that might not occur to you.

2) Try on a bunch of helmets BEFORE you get your scoot. You can't know how one will fit and feel until it is actually on your head for a while (like 20 minutes or so). When you get the scooter, you will have to have a helmet to drive away - do your research beforehand so you don't make a snap decision based solely on price or availability. A full face offers the most protection, but may not fit under the seat. Mine doesn't, but that is not at all a problem. Hi-viz absolutely makes you more visible (but figure you are still invisible).

3) Gloves are pretty much a requirement. Having bits of stuff hitting your knuckles is not very nice, and if you should have a problem, your hands will be the first bit to hit the ground. Solid work gloves are OK, but cycle specific are probably better.

4) If you can swing a jacket that offers some armour, by all means go for it. If you can't, save up and get something ASAP. Check out the ATGATT thread - it is a long read with lots of opinions, but quite instructive.

5) Enjoy the new wheels. My PCX is the first powered two-wheel device I have ever been on, and it still brings a wide smile to my face whenever I hop on.

Good luck.
On my scoot, getting there is WAY more than half the fun!

Aside from what was mentioned, I would only add that jeans are NOT protective gear(it's made of cotton), and you might consider getting boots or something that covers the top of your ankles.

I use RST Jeans which have Kevlar lining, about as minimal as I would go, I feel i'd look a bit daft on a scooter with armored biker leathers.

Love the tip about wearing helmets for 20mins in the store, could be there all day lol
Gloves are a good thing (I remember my BMX days and the equipment I had way back then)
I have a leather jacket I'll use for the test but will get something better
A stiff pair of boots is definitely needed (arthritis in feet)

I'll get in touch with my cousin in Edinburgh about the RST Jeans

I grew up in the Sarnia, Ontario area, but was born in Edinburgh, Scotland (don't hold that against me, I don't lol)

Thanks to everyone who replied :)

Sarnia? That is like being in the US. :P I spent my youth summers north of Kenora. I think we went 16 years in a row.

Oh :D .

I think the real question is whether you want to look cool, or whether you'd rather have broken bones:

And yes, that happened on my PCX, at about 10 mph.

Sarnia is a border town with Port Huron, Michigan.
I'm in my mid 40s so I don't plan on looking cool anymore (long hair gone but still love the 80s rock lol).
And to Valiant... OUCH!!! Get well soon if you haven't already

Doesn't idiot cover it? Paint yourself and dayglo and work out how much energy a 10mph PCX has to cause this kind of damage.

Perhaps it might not happen to the rest of the world?

You can all still worry though.

What is the most visible dayglo colour?

Woooo, scary.

Oh, and good advice given to wear a helmet awhile before buying one. Shops are use to that around here. How else will you know How it feels? Gotta give it some time on your chinney-chin-chin :) How's it feel all over? Too tight, too loose, visibility, pressure anywhere? At the brow, ears, cheeks? How about eyeglasses? Wear them? Will they fit inside? Etc.
I'm so excited for You!! 8) Fun Times!!

Well first off, this happened about a week before I had that gear in the picture. I was wearing a T-shirt, , a helmet, long pants, leather gloves, and simple motorcycle boots(above ankle with a shin plate).

Lowside on an uphill left turn. Road was crowned, I went too close to the edge of the road(the last 18 inches or so), and there was evidently moss there that I didn't see. I can't be 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure the edge of my boot caught the ground and simply twisted my leg to the left until the bones broke and I got dragged off the scooter.
