Another benefit of living in Thailand

I experienced another benefit of living in Thailand today ....

Yesterday I got caught in a monsoon rain and the pouch I had my iPhone in leaked (to put it mildly). When I opened the pouch one edge of my phone was sitting in about a quarter of an inch of water (6mm) and had powered off with no response. Things hadn't changed by today so I took it to a local electronics mall. They opened it up in front of me and I saw water trapped inside of it. In the end it cost me 3,100 Thai baht (£58; €73; $97), including a new screen and battery, and the job was done in under 3 hours. I will take that any time.

I just finished a contract in Australia and got to experience Thai food in an entirely new way and developed a new appreciation for it.

We love Thai food. It would be great to move to Thailand, but I have special medical needs so that isn't a possibility in this lifetime.

3,100 baht to fix a phone. 22,000-25,000 baht to purchase a similar replacement model. I think it is a fairly obvious choice.

Keep in mind that the phones are no longer subsidized like they use to be. Now you will pay $500 for a new phone instead of nothing down with a 2 year contract. Verizon was one of the first to sell phones this way. That is why people use to say that Verizon phones were too expensive. However, good deals are still out there. My wife has a Samsung phone that cost us $240. However, for a limited time there was a $200 rebate. So, we purchased the phone on a 24 month payment plan, waited for the rebate which took about 2 months, and paid the phone off with the rebate. It isn't an iPhone but it will do the job. I didn't see any rebates on iphones, so they are still expensive to purchase. I have a friend who waits for the latest version of the iPhone and is one of the first ones to buy one. Several of our grown kids have iphones, but they are working and can afford them. I'm not sure if I would buy one, if I wasn't retired. I like Samsung products. Still, even the latest of their products are expensive. I guess if you want the best, you have to be willing to pay for it.
