Phone Mount

Well, it happened. Yesterday, on my way to the Honda dealer on my PCX to test drive the Forza (that I bought, today), I had my phone mounted on one of those handlebar mounts. I had the squeeze arms on the sides pushed in and both the top and bottom straps (basically elastic hair ties) in place. Needless to say... bumpy road... heard some sort of clunk... a pickup pulled up beside me and told me my phone had been dropped... couldn't find any of the pieces... Sprint tried to ping the phone and it was dead... had it turned off... ordered replacement on the insurance (might have been cheaper to buy a new phone)... should have a new phone by Tuesday.

That's the last time I'll be doing that. Dropped the PCX off at the dealer today for service, tomorrow -- I'll remove the clamp before I turn the bike over to my son.

If you're using the phone mainly for incoming calls, try a Bluetooth headset with the new phone so you can keep it in your jacket.
HEY, if you and your son will be riding together, think about a pair of the SMH10 Bluetooth headsets from SENA.
My wife bought us a pair and they're terrific as intercoms. I haven't tried them on separate bikes, yet.
The SENA unit does a bunch more magic stuff as far as controlling the smartphone, linking in an iPod, etc.
If you're using the phone as a GPS, folks seem to recommend a RAM (brand) mount.

That Bluetooth headset only works if your wife wants to hear you. My wife doesn't want one of those because she doesn't want to hear me when I tell her that she is following too close or she needs to stop for gas because by my estimate she is almost out. In fact, I can't really tell her much of anything when we are riding. I have 50 years worth of riding experience. She has maybe 2 years, but she feels she knows everything there is to know about riding. Hmmm. Just carry your phone in your pocket and don't worry about calls till you pull over.

I think I have the same mount as you from what you described. So far I havent had an issue at all. I do check the tightness of the mounts quite often as it worries me some. The big difference to me is that my Iphone is under the seat in its leather pouch when I ride, the spare HTC is the one that is mounted for GPS and music. If it falls and breaks, Im not out much.

One thing you can do is to use fishing line through the phones case and loop it over the mount so if the phone gets loose it just dangles there instead of crashing to the road.

I think when you use one of those mounts you should consider putting a piece of rubber between it and the handlebar to keep the mount from shifting. Also, I use a rubber band around mine and the mount to make sure it doesn't work loose. I think the fishing line is a great extra precaution.

the mount was solid, and I had two rubber bands around the phone -- and I had it "squeezed" in all the way. It just popped out with a good bump in the road.

my son and I have the bluetooth headsets. I used the phone on the stand for a) the GPS and b) the clock. Since my son will be taking over the PCX, he doesn't care about the time and he hates using the GPS, so since the Forza has a clock, I'll just have to pull over to see what the GPS in the glovebox says. It's not going on the handlebars, again.
