Reserve 1 Gallon Gas Can?

Post by Jhois1 »

Has anyone added a reserve can of gas to carry under the seat or in the Top Box? I figure I could carry a 1 gallon can under the seat.

Is it a safety issue?

I ask because I ride 50 - 60 miles a day when I take my PCX150 to work and my milage is only around 80-85 MPG currently and don't want to HAVE TO fill up before I leave.

Also, has anyone ran the tank all the way down to empty (ran out of gas)? Then fueled up. Does this harm anything?

Running very low can cause fuel pump problems.
I'm like you I travel 27 miles each way to and from work so I have to fill it every second day.
A one gallon container like this will fit under the seat.
Shouldn't be a hazard so long as the can is properly sealed and isn't overfilled.

gn2 - I take it that you cannot store the 1 gallon can AND your helmet under the seat at the same time?

I am looking at a set top box eventually but currently only have the seat storage.

I asked about running low on gas cause I am finding it hard to believe that the tank is truly 1.6 gallons ;)

Correct, not a chance.
Poor fuel range is one reason the PCX is unsuited to longer commutes.
The tank is 1.3 gallons imperial, 1.6 US
I fill mine once the last bar has started flashing and it usually takes about 5.6 litres.

I too am having my doubts about this. I have only done a few fill ups so far, but it seems like 1.3 with the reserve triggering the flashing at 1.0 used. (in the US) I still need to have more samples of fueling up to get better data. The temerature did a large shift this week from high 90's to above 107, so fuel volumes change from morning to afternoon and I filled up when it was pretty hot.

As for the original post, would these work? MSR Fuel Bottle

It's not entirely unknown for a PCX tank to find itsself full to the brim with diesel...

use the helmet loop cable to hang your helmet on the side from under the seat. i do that in the summer anyway as my helmet is wet with sweat by the time i get to work to put it inside the topbox.

I know someone who did that with their helmet and returned to find someone else had used it as a toilet.

We have a small tail box on ours and have put a 1 gallon container in it for long drives. So far, no problems. Just keep in mind that the container can shift back and forth so put something on each side to keep the amount of travel down. We put towels on both sides to help.

Reserve 1 Gallon Gas Can?

Post by Alibally »

Unless your planing to cross the Sahara or Australia a litre or us quart is plenty for emergencies. That would last 20 miles approx so if your any further than that from a fuel station with an empty tank you deserve everything you get.

From the other forum...
sendler wrote:Ran my PCX150 empty. I holds 1.639 gallonsUS/ 6.2 liters full to the brim. Coasted onto the side street under a handy street light and poured in a bottle worth to get me moving again. Filled the tank and the bottle again with 1.639 gallonsUS/ 6.204 liters. That is really all it can hold right to the edge of the cap. The last bar flashes at about .35 gallonsUS/ 1.325 liters.
