Sticker, title & owners manual say 2018 but bodywork is 2017

Post by springer1 »

I bought my PCX in June 2017 and the dealer said they just received it - a 2018. I've never thought to check it out before because the ID stickers on the scooter, the title, and the owners manual all say 2018, but the bodywork is definitely a 2017.

Anyways, I am thinking about putting new rear shocks on it and I've read that the 2018 shocks are different than previous years'. Can anyone explain what the rear shock difference is so I can make sure I get the right ones? Thanks

Ok, first and foremost, here in the United States they sell bikes and scooters by what they call Model Year. As you may know, when it comes to cars they do the same thing.

When I purchased my wife's PCX in mid 2012 it was introduced as a 2013 model, which was probably more correct than yours is because Honda upgraded the engine for the 2013 year from a 125cc to a 150cc. (Quite obvious).

Now let us look at your situation. From what I have read, the 2018 year had changes that meant that 2017 shocks would not work on it, and vice versa. As I understand it the airbox was moved back some which meant that the previous year shocks would be too fat for the area where they bolt on. Therefore, special shocks had to be created for the 2018, from both Honda and from third party suppliers such as YSS.

You might be able to find out which ones will fit yours by asking the parts desk at the dealer to show you a 2017 set of shocks and a 2018 set so that you can compare them with yours. As I understand it the difference should be fairly obvious, but that is something you will have to determine yourself.

Interestingly enough I just checked online and the 2016-2018 have the same shock part number. It is the 2019 that is different.

That is the problem with Model Year vs Production Year. Everyone in the world except us uses production year. Therefore, what I have been reading must have pertained to the PCX PRODUCED in mid 2018 for the 2019 year. Thus, for us it would be the 2019 Model Year that you should be concerned about, not the 2018 model year. Good news.

Ahhhh, understood. Thanks for the clarification, I was going to order the shock for the 2017 since that's what the bodywork on my PCX is - and this supports that. Thanks !

I could be mistaken but I as I understood it the 2017 and 2018 PCX models were basically the same and it was the new 2019 model (bronze colored) introduced earlier in the Summer that had all the big changes to the shocks, motor, wheels, tires, storage spaces, etc. . ..

When I bought mine in late May of 2017 it was already considered a leftover and the 2018 models were soon on the showroom floor not long after. They still offered white and that dark blue color for the 2018 models in the U.S.. :geek:

Yes, I believe I read that the only changes between some of the Model Years was the color choices.

I really wanted the white, but they only had a blue one that day. I like the blue, but I love the white. Maybe I should order white panels and swap it

You can. It isn't that hard to swap them. Just make sure they fit your particular year and bam, you own a white PCX. Others have done it.
