Our Homebrew Saddlebag Solution!

Post by Pat Anderson »

Patty and I are getting ready for a five day Vancouver Island scoot in July! I would prefer going for a longer time and going farther, but Patty has really come a long way just agreeing to do this sort of test ride! Anacortes to Sydney (staying day 1 in Victoria), day 2 Victoria to Nanaimo, day 3 Nanaimo to Comox, day 4 Comox back to Nanaimo, day 5 Nanaimo to Victoria and back to Anacortes the next day. So we need some luggage capacity, probably more than we can carry under the seat! Here is our solution. The duffel bag is strapped to the passenger seat with Walmart lashing straps. The saddlebags are insulated beverage carriers that Patty modified so that each pair rides exactly where they need to be on our PCX150s! Love to hook up with any Vancouver Island PCX150ers!

Sweet! Plus they look great in the license plate matching plaid. I'd love to see more pics if you have them.

Make sure you carry something to hold up the new bags if they tear or break loose. I know that the heavy duty saddle bags that most motorcycle riders would choose is double and triple stitched. They have to be able to handle the vibration.
Good luck on your ride, and let us know how it goes with plenty of pictures.

I reckon you've got the funkiest looking set of side bags I've ever seen.
I hope the strap are strong enough.

Well! Will ya Look at That! Like Checkers!! But, not really.
Maybe a silly question, but where will your Patty be sitting? It looks a wee bit crowded.
Strap her and the rest tightly, then off you go. Have Fun, be safe, post back with happy stories! 8)

Patty will be sitting on her own PCX150, a red one, with matching red checkered saddlebags! I think she needs to adjust the straps so the saddlebags ride just a little higher.

I think I will ask her to go over all the stitching again on the Sailrite just to be sure!

MikeP, love to have a face to face! We'll be in Nanaimo on July 11th, and again on the 13th - in Comox on the 12th. PM me with your cell!

Here is photo of Patty with our scoots showing the current state of our saddlebag project!

Image

Patty adjusted the straps on her saddlebags to get them riding higher. We both have them well away from the tailpipe, and we went for a short ride, ~5 miles, today to see how they behave. Report is all good! We packed them more less like we would for the trip (mine were actually packed with what I will be taking, decided no duffel bag is necessary) and Patty packed hers with towels just so there would be something in them! They stayed put very nicely, didn't flop for bounce around at all. These are actually very small, I should take a side shot so you can see just how small they are, but they are entirely adequate for our needs! All in all, very happy with how they turned out!

I See 2 Scoots! Yes, a side shot please

Thanks Pat for the quick answer! Phew I was worried there for a bit. Picturing Poor Patty clingin' to the straps atop the tailbag losing her balance (quickly). Nooo, not so. Patty has her own PCX!
Yes the sidebags are positioned better (higher) now, that's good :) Roadtest w/checker bags was 5 miles. But at what speed(s)? You knew I'd ask that because you left that door ajar :P

Hooray you'll be meeting up with another Hooligan! That'll be MikeP. (Psst...ask him to take some photo's of you n Patty because he does a fine fine job of it) :P

Enjoy your trip, be safe and post back when you can. I can only imagine. Fun times!

To MikeP....Another lovely photo above ;)

MikeP, I like your saddlebags. Where did you get them and how did you adjust them so that they wouldn't hit the exhaust or bounce around too much?

Hi Mel46, I bought these at canadamotorcycle.con. They are called "cortech super 2.0" Bikebandit.com does a great review of the bags plus the tail bag. I have both and just love them. I hope the picture below gives a good example of how they look. Oh and you can adjust the fit with the velcro straps that stradle the top of the seat. That gets them up off the exhaust.

Cheers
Mike

Showing off our side bags? Ok I'm in on this :D Insulated too.
Awhile back I bought a pair of Scooter Logic bags on Amazon, now I see their competitor, Jet @ https://www.jet.com is selling them. They claim to have the very best price on everything they sell.
o_O What! Me? Be a traitor? Snicker, snicker. "It's all about that price" (and a few other incidentals) :D

Here's both sites with the SAME PRICE! NOTE: Discount right now at Jet with the purchase of 3 items.

Jet Linky: https://jet.com/product/ScootR-Logic-Sa ... 5be54eb368

Amazon Linky: https://www.amazon.com/Kwik-Tek-Scooter ... B00386LMZU

And pics.
Some info: Each bag has a hooded flap w/plastic clasp closure. Once the clasp is unlatched/lift the flap and there's a zippered closure. Unzip that to expose your single insulated compartment.

No sideview pix for until some time next week at the earliest, we are in Okanogan visiting our granddaughters (and their parents, but the kids are the main attraction).

We looked at the Scooter Logic bags on on Amazon, but Patty said "I can make bags like those for half the cost." And she did. So, our bags are maybe not as large (hard to tell) or as durable (again, who knows?), but I am pretty sure they will work for our purposes for now!
