My 600 mile experience (initial service)

Post by caseybea »

So, for about the final 100-ish or so miles of my first 600 miles on my new PCX150, I started to notice a distinct "shudder" when I started my bike from a stop. Once I got moving, it was fine, but it was definitely noticeable when starting from a dead stop. Only noticeable if I started easy. If I gunned it, it wasn't apparent.

Anyway, I just hit 600mi, so figured the valve clearance adjustment would fix it. IT DID.

The place I took my bike to also had me drop it off a day before, they insisted that the bike be stone cold for that particular procedure. Noted on my service page when I picked it up that they indeed did have to make some adjustments to the valve clearance.

Overall for the service (which includes the oils change, new plug, blah blah blah) was $218US (includes taxes).

Yes, pricey by my standards, but I truly believe it was worth it. My personal experience: The valve adjustment thing is real.

Your mileage may vary................

Clutch shudder, if I start off slowly and gently in traffic it will shudder. Once you do a few more energetic starts it goes away. I bet your garage took your bike for a checkup ride after the service, and likely was not taking it easy from still.

probable theory, but i don't think so. For one, the bike was serviced the day before... it sat a day. I've gotten to recognize my bike, how it runs. Definitely smoother now.

Valves out of adjustment would probably not produce the symptoms you describe but they are exactly those of clutch judder which happens because of too many gentle starts.
Your new found smoothness is because the clutch shoes have been deglazed.

The shudder will come back if you are too gentle with the throttle (design flaw or feature of this CVT system). Sinc eI started being a bit less gentle, but not WOFT starts the problem has mostly gone away.
