Thinking about buying a 2015 PCX but ...?

Post by Honda cub »

Hello I was pretty close to putting an order in for a 2015 Honda PCX, that was until I read about the alarming issue concerning the centre stand/crankcase possible damage.

I understand that Honda addressed this problem on the PCX150, was the PCX125 version also updated by Honda at the same time?

Thanks

Hi. Yes, all 125 ESP models, that is those post 2013 are free of this issue. Not been a problem on new models for quite some time.

The problem was with the original 125 model launched in 2009 and phased out in 2012.

Thanks for confirmation. None of the alternatives did much for me appearance wise.

Went down to the local Honda dealership today. They have two in stock, a black brand new with zero miles at £2700 and a white 2015 ex demo with 500 miles on the clock for £2100. I'll pass on both and order a red one with top box sometime in the very near future.

Very impressed with the PCX, loads of storage space compared to the SH125i that sat next to them in the showroom. PCX looks a lot more scooter for slightly less money too.

Asked the salesman about servicing costs and he thought around the £200 mark not including checking the valves!

The latest SH125i has better underseat storage than the previous one and also has ABS.

Hmm - total servicing over 2 years is about £900+! (average service cost I got quoted from London dealers were tje 600 mile about £80 inc vat, to £200+ for latter services.
If you feel confident doing some service yourself and hoping nothing major goes wrong during the 2 years, then doing it yourself will save most of that cost allowing for minor things that may break and cost a few hundred to fix.

I am waiting for mine to arrive new and asked the sales guy at Honda about service plans. He quoted me £263 per year for 2 years. Thereby keeping inline with the warranty. I also opted for the extended 12 month warranty which seemed a reasonable cost, extra £72.

I asked another local servicing shop who quoted £75+vat for the first service and £100+vat for subsequent ones. Although he flinched a bit when I asked if that included valve clearance checks!

Yep a lot of money and the salesman also told me that the valve clearances needed checking after only 600 miles! Doing the servicing myself has crossed my mind given the amount Honda charge. I do maintain my Honda C90 myself and have a bike lift for ease of repairs, but losing the warranty is the killer should anything major go wrong. Having said that it is brand new and should have very few problems within the first 2 years, 5000 mile over a 2 year period ought to be relatively trouble free.

Good choice... I'm happy, are you happy! We are all happy now.
You will need a Service Manual, get a shout out to your stateside homies to mail you one.
42.50 USD and with that we don't need a warranty hostage dealership spiff program. If catastrophic failure set it on fire and swear it blew up. And for that matter we don't need a valve clearance check at 600, 2000 or maybe even 5000 miles... still keeping an eye that.

If the is ex-VAT then it comes in about £620 - wonder if that's inc. of everything. Good price if you could get that in writing :)

Okay Honda cub, if you can stick it out and wait a bit longer, cheers to your power of controll! Then when yer ready set get your hearts desire in the Red ;)

Me? I'm so bad at waiting :| especially for shiny new bikes and cars. I see it, I want it. Not later. But Now!
Haha! Never works though. I must save, then buy. When I get old(er) much old(er), old(er) than today ........I'm going to go on a plastic charging binge! What the hell! Right? Hmm, on second thought I think I'll start that sooner :D

So.....when did you say you were getting yer PCX again?

An oil change at 2k and 4k Km is the only thing I see in the first year of ownership. There is nothing else that need to be done.

At the dealership here in Thailand, that should run about $15 total. What would they be doing to these bikes to get service charges so high? Just western labor charges?

Honda's attitude to servicing and warranty is, unsurprisingly, very firmly in favour of the dealers. My bike's getting a 600 mile service at a local independent I've used before- they're aware of Honda's requirement to use original parts in order to maintain the warranty. I've just had email from Honda UK today (only a week after I contacted them), confirming that I was free to use independents for servicing but insisting that "We recommend that any repairs and services, especially the 600 miles service, are done within our Honda dealership network because our technicians have been trained how to maintain Honda vehicles. They follow specific procedures and use only Honda genuine parts in order to ensure that the motorcycle will continue working properly and no issues will arise in the future. After a Honda dealership has worked on the vehicle they keep records within our Honda service history system and by checking those records we can confirm that the warranty of a vehicle is still valid....It is possible for an independent VAT registered dealership to take care of the motorcycle but, in any case, a certified technician should service it. We recommend a Honda technician mainly because otherwise it would be more difficult to find out whether the procedures established by Honda have been followed and Honda genuine parts have been used. Therefore, if you would like to keep the warranty of you Honda PCX125 intact, you need to have it serviced by a Honda authorized dealer or a VAT registered dealership and keep all documents and invoices to prove what exactly has been done during the routine services or repairs."
Are Honda using some ultra-special components that no-one else can get hold of? Nope. It's a scooter, not a Veyron or a Moto GP bike....An independent can get Honda parts easily enough. Anything the shop I'm using Saturday can't do, another local one (Honda specialists) should. The nearest local dealer couldn't be bothered to reply to an email request about a demo and in-stock bikes when I was buying, so I couldn't be bothered to phone them or drop in. Perhaps they were having IT problems...but they ignored a service request three weeks later as well. And yes, Honda think I should still give them another chance and phone them, or try another dealer even further away...No, Honda should tell them to answer customer requests. I shouldn't have to chase them to give them work!

Experienced that 'no reply' problem from a London Honda dealer who did not respond to a few email requests when I was looking to buy a PCX - they only answered on the phone. Also interesting to see the user feedback on some London Honda dealers - absolutely dire testimony about customer service.
Considering how people here have reported dealers breaking panels, not fitting fuel pumps properly (leaks!) and other issues, Honda approved and trained mechanics at dealers seem the stereo-typical crowd who charge the earth for poor service.

Chiswick Honda houses some of the most objectionable human beings I have ever had the misfortune to meet.

Yep, they were the ones I was advised to go to, but they did not reply to emails and the reviews give them 'stay clear' warnings. I was going to add 'Chiswick' in my post but left it out :)

If we're naming and shaming....Chichester Honda, who clearly have so much business that they can afford to ignore paying customers, or don't give a toss if they have IT problems as long as their pretty website's up and running. You aren't having my money any time.... And Crescent in Southampton? Dubious advertising of an ex-demo PCX on eBay (it was a pre-facelift bike, hump and all, barely a reduction in price considering the age it had), and there's a disgruntled PCX owner who posted a vid...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xeYRlzrfrU I don't have their side of the story, but that didn't fill me with confidence.

OTOH, Blade Honda in Reading. Sharp practice, in the nicest possible way. Excellent sales experience, and if they were local I'd be be giving them the servicing business too. Had a follow-up phone call from Andy the salesman yesterday. He checks his email and answers the phone, unlike some. When the mark three PCX comes out in two or three years, I'll be dropping them a line....

Good to hear about Blade in Reading. Always seem to have some good low miles used PCX's.

Just worried about riding one back all the way to Nw London. Only had a days CBT on a geared 125'

Chiswick Honda. Horrible place. Went their a few weeks back. Not one person either acknowledged me yet alone approached me. Also not a single bike had a price ticket on either.
