According to the owner's manual of my 2018 Liberty 150i ABS, the max carrying weight is 427 lbs.

If I recall - the Burgman 400's limit is @410 lbs.


Both of which are around 60 to 75 lbs more than most scooters and motorcycles,

I am considering the idea that the Piaggio figures are a misprint of 100 lbs.
Or, they've used the load limits of both tires to reach this figure - which I think is NOT the same as the weight the scooter can safely handle.

Am I wrong - or can that 255 lb Piaggio safely carry that much?

Interested to know where you get the figures from, Piaggio don't openly advertise carrying capacities on their website.

I saw a picture a few years ago of a guy on a scooter in India carrying another scooter crossways on his scooter. Now I am pretty sure that scooter being carried weighed at least 300 pounds, so I would say that it can be done on either scooter. It would depend on the shocks themselves.

When I owned my Burgman 400 I carried heavy passengers quite a few times. Between their weight and mine the combined weight was well over 350 pounds, plus whatever I already had stored in the Burgman (which also had a tailbox). We even went grocery shopping on it. Steering was affected in that it was sluggish turning corners, but otherwise it was fine.

...and then there is the family car...:-)

I think the manufacturers post load capacity data based on how well the machine will perform and brake under certain load bearing conditions or circumstances. They want to inform the consumer as to the limitations and recommended usage of their products.

It's possible they will handle more load I guess but the handling, acceleration, and braking characteristics may be adversely effected.

That said, you know as well as I do that in some countries families use their motor scooters like we use a family car. . .or even a small truck. It's truly amazing and kind of puts things in perspective as to how lucky we have it sometimes when others struggle every day just to get by and feed themselves.

Oh, I did think of one possible difference, though I have not checked this for a fact. How many shocks do each of those scooters have? I think k I read somewhere that the new Burgman only has a single shock in the back. If that is correct it would really limit its weight-carrying capacity.

Info was on page 145 of this 330 page owner's manual....languages include ENG,FR,ES,PT and one which I think is Ute - possibly Crow (Native Americans)

Burgman has one massive horizontal uni-shock under the belly. Lotta fun to adjust.
Burgman 400 has one of the highest weight capacities at @410 lbs - I'm not familiar with any other scooter rated over 400 lbs.
