Why do some new members with a "help me" 1st post .... never respond or are never heard from again .... after they get numerous responses trying to be of assistance.

Possibly because they either
a: find out what they need and go happily on their way
or
b: don't find out what they need and go elsewhere to find out.

It's a common problem. I administer another site (dealing with analytical chemistry) and see the same thing there.
