After lengthy search, I decide to give my new PCX a try with car engine oil, namely the Mobil 1 gold 0w-40.

The official description: "For extreme conditions"

I reckon this oil should be OK.

Do you gents use car oils?

This would be an excellent choice for both your upcoming trip and general, year-round use at home.

I noticed it is for extreme conditions, desert would be an extreme.

Some folks do use car oil here, their feedback is postive.

Oil is oil.
Anything in the correct viscosity for your environment will do.
But you would probably be better with the recommended 10w 30

I disagree with this sentiment. Group IV synthetic oil is quite superior to conventional oil. Group III "synthetic" oil is somewhere between Group IV ("true" synthetic) and conventional oils. (And, while Group III oils can be legally sold in the US as "synthetic," they are not allowed to be labeled as such in Europe.)

I do agree with this statement, as long as you're also including driving conditions and equipment conditions in your qualifications of "environment," and not just climate and/or geographic location.

I disagree with this. But then, we might have different goals. My goal is equipment longevity 1st, fuel economy 2nd, and oil cost 3rd. Typically, equipment manufacturers make oil recommendations based on a heavier bias towards fuel economy and oil cost. Because of these differences in goals, I'm typically going to choose (and recommend) oils that provide more equipment protection than what the manufacturer would recommend.

Yes, there are more extreme conditions. (Gas turbine engines would be just one example. But, as spinning engines (rather than reciprocating engines) those specify Group V (ester-based) oils, rather than Group IV (polyalphaolefin-based) or Group III (hydro-isomerized conventional-based) oils.)

So perhaps I should've said, "There's not any more of an extreme condition applicable to automobile engine oils than the High Temperature/High Shear environment (1,750°F/150,000 rpm) of a modern automobile engine's turbocharger."

I still disagree, but I completely understand your reluctance to put expensive oil in a relatively inexpensive machine. The perceived ROI isn't great enough to warrant worrying about it.

What do you mean by "slippery or sticky?" is it the viscosity? is 0W-40 sticky or slippery?

My will to live isn't where I put it last....

Its a joke.
There is no sticky motor oil, its all slippery and absolutely any half decent 10w30 will be fine.

I'm sorry about my post about this, but your posts more than likely drive people away from the forum. If that what the forum wants, good for them and I will post a lot less or leave. I'm tired of reading sarcastic responses not just from you. A lot from other long time members too.

Yes you were here a long time, but like the saying goes, if you don't have anything good to say, don't say it.

I see the same questions asked too and don't contribute as many others help people find the information they need, but you could offer more help by asking people to search or better yet, provide useful links so people can learn. I post if I can help an no one else answers.
