I'm going to be needing to get some insurance on my new PCX this spring in order to get my plate for the scooter. Since we're not talking auto or full fledged motorcycles here, but rather scooters, I'd like to query the forum about any pitfalls you may have encountered in dealing with scooter insurance and underwriters. I should also mention that whatever insurance I go with must also be primary for medical coverage, as Obamacare will not assume primary coverage.

Anything come to mind as to which national underwriters have given you good service and which have not when you needed them?

I've been using Progressive for several years because I like their user-friendly website and agents. I've never had a claim with them where I was the at-fault party, but I did have one where I was the injured party and they were very helpful and settled quickly with the other carrier to everyone's satisfaction. Also my daughter had a claim where she and the other driver were considered 50-50 at fault in the accident, and Progressive solved all her issues with the claim quickly and, I thought, fairly.

YMMV, of course.

Sorry , I don't know the answer to your personal coverage question, but no doubt Progressive does. Worth a try, anyway.

Thanks for the comments Johnny, I'll get a quote from them.

I have State Farm for the PCX, they insure my home, car as well. Never had to deal with claim or one thing. Payment goes one way and hope it stays that way.

Is insurance required for a scooter in Michigan ??? I do not even bother with insurance for a scooter here in Florida, I do not ride it that much. Same with my motorcycles, I have a lot of them and some of them only get ridden a few times per year...

JP - so long as you stay invisible, I guess you are fine, but to me, you are riding with your pants down. You may not have a house or anything to loose, then you are putting the other guy in financial jeopardy as well. And on the off chance you are hurt, you are definitely bankrupt.

Rick54 - I have Progressive and it is not very much money, but there is VERY LITTLE in the way of personal bodily injury coverage built into my policy. I'm sure they can sell you more. I confess that I have not read the fine print on my regular health coverage, but your comment will make me investigate.

Jetpilot, yes, insurance is required. Can't get a plate without showing proof of insurance. Scooters that are rated 49cc's or less don't need a plate and thus no insurance.

George, yes the Obamacare as well as Medicare cannot be primary on medical auto coverage. Thus the need for medical on scooter insurance.

To all, Michigan has no fault insurance, which is fubar. My grandmother who was 72 at the time, AND a licensed driver was crossing the street on foot at a crosswalk. A car making a right turn hit her and knocked her down sending her to the hospital with minor scrapes and bumps. Remember, she was on foot crossing the street. The Michigan no fault law said because she was a licensed driver involved in a auto related accident, the claim had to first go against her insurance! Then the insurance companies fight out who was at fault.

Another story, a young girl was riding on the back of her boyfriends motorcycle and fell off. Because she was living in a household that had insured drivers, her parents, the claim had to go against her parents policy first!

That raises an interesting question. Among our U.S. forum members, who is required by their state to have insurance on their scooters/bikes/cars and who isn't? In Texas, thanks to the efforts of the insurance lobby and their friends in the Texas Legislature, we've had to have it since around 1982, if I remember correctly. The way they enforce it is the same way, by us having to show proof of insurance at the DMV to register or renew our vehicles.

It's a little surprising that a super-red state like Texas would have fallen into this but we did anyway. Your first clue, of course, is that insurance is BIG business and the needs and wishes of big business are always carefully tended to around here. So, thanks to their tireless efforts, we can rest easy knowing that no Texans, rich or poor, are going around with unsufficient coverage. Interesting that Florida hasn't taken the bait yet. Lack of due diligence on the part of the insurance lobby, I'd guess.

So who on this forum is required by law to carry insurance and who isn't? Not to derail the thread; just a little side issue while we're on the subject.

All motor vehicles including scooters are required by law to have insurance here in the UK that use public roads.

To Clarify a bit,

In Florida we do have to have insurance for " financial responsibility ". It is very minimal to cover damage to another party, and very cheap, I add it to my cars policy... I do not insure the motorcycle against damage, if it gets damaged or stolen, I pay for it. I have medical insurance, so there is no need to add a bunch more onto the car policy and pay twice.
