Direct Access Course for Automatics

Hi,

I wish to take my A License, at least 395cc on an automatic motorbike/scooter. Burgman 400, TMAX 400

I live in South Wales, UK. Swansea and Cardiff are my nearest cities.

But I'm struggling to find anyone in the area who can supply the bike/scooter.

The people I have spoken to, suggest I buy the bike/scooter. Which at this time is not feasible.

I'm ready to look further afield.

So, does anyone know where I can take a Direct Access Course for automatics?

Alan Frances

Is there any reason you can't ride a manual?

Look if I could ride a manual bike, I wouldn't be asking the above question.

If I knew why you think you can't ride a manual I wouldn't be asking.

That would be a different topic all together.

Can you just answer the above question or leave my thread and let the others answer.

You'll get a far better chance of a definitive answer to your specific question on Maxi-Muppets.
But be warned, there's a fair chance someone there may also wish to help by asking you other questions.

Buying 1st is not an option as you have to pass your test before you can ride it (or have one on loan and insurance from a training company). If you turn up on one to take a test they won't let you take it and may report you. Only one company in London I know of that have (did have) a 500cc scooter but it never got used so they may no longer have it - as to other parts of the country, most likely no trainin facility caters for large CC scooter auto courses.
You could buy a 500cc MP3 as you can ride that on a car licence.

I'm in the U.S.A. and I'm adding another question to the already asked questions.

You mean to tell me there are no automatic/aka/scooters available to use in your motorcycle course(s)? Why is that? It baffles me. This is 2016. "Hel-lo from the Other Side!" And.....

Hello to Alan, welcome. Please be a little patient with us. Someone will help you. Ahh, But I'm Not  that one (as you can tell by my question above :(

WN - in the UK people starting out normally take CBT training to get on the road and that is capped at 125 scooters or geared bikes. Usually above that people take a full test on a 500cc+ bike (or A2 250cc) test on a geared bike - not much call for anything other than CBT or full test so no financial gain for training centres to purchase higher CC scooters.

Not very friendly alfranko. It was a simple enough question.

When I first called the largest school in my area to inquire about taking the safety course, I was told that they "had three 250cc motorcycles available for me to use, but I had to provide my own helmet and gear." When I asked if I could provide my own bike, the response was, "sure, as long as it isn't one of those scooter things. What kind of bike do you have?" I told her I had a Honda PCX 150, at which point she laughed and said, "Don't bother. We have standards around here" and hung up.

My second call was to a place that also provided motorcycles, but I was more than welcome to ride my own scooter, as long as it was legal. That's where I'm going. Those other people can apply their lips to a specific part of my anatomy.

You would think that anyone in business would be welcoming and at the very least interested in my patronage, but apparently some people are so successful that they can afford to be snobbish, elitist, and cater to the $40,000 bike crowd.

I know that I am not going to be very helpful on this because I am in America, but over here there are states that will allow you to take your motorcycle driving test on a scooter as long as you can do the course. You see, some states have made provisions for handicapped riders, and some of those riders can not shift gears. However, I have not come across any motorcycle training courses the allow scooters, but rather they teach you how to shift using their bikes. If you are handicapped you should check into the allowances for handicapped riders. Both my wife and I have handicap tags for our scooters, so I know that it can be done. Over there though, it might be a different story.

Thank you for all the replies.

Looks like I'll have take the test for the A1 Licence.

Then, in roughly 2 years upgrade the licence and bike.

Again, thank you all.

I'm not sure if this is any good but I've found out a riding school that has a DTC bike that can be used for a auto DAS test. They use a Honda NC700s

I'm one of many people who did the full test, with the aim of riding an auto, on a geared bike. I did it so that my options were open in in the future for gears. And now I'm on a motorbike.
