What's a meteorite worth?

So I am cutting firewood in my woods today. I see a shiny object poking up through the leaves.
I don't have a job anymore I retired last Friday. :D :geek:
It's a meteorite. We found one on our farm growing up so I knew what it was first time I saw it.
It is about this size of a large clenched fist.
It weighs 1.7 lbs.
It looks like it has rust on it but a magnet will NOT stick to it.
Under a better light it looks green in spots.
What's it worth? I see a whole bunch of smaller ones on eBay.

I'd contact the nearest large University with a Geology department, and ask them.

They may try to hem and haw about not being able to "appraise" it, but if you're politely persistent, (and hint that you might be willing to donate it) they will eventually either tell you what it's worth, or where to go to find out.

That Totally Rocks!! :D
Seriously, I have no idea of it's value. As a kid I would hunt for them. I never found any Real ones. But, I thought they were at the time.
Cool Find! Nice size too!

Oh, and Congrats on retiring Ole....Enjoy yourself and Keep Rockin' :D

Since its a space rock that was dense enough to make it through the atmosphere the weight is greater than its size appears in the minds eye. Please do us a favor and take a picture with a quarter beside the meteorite. It will help visualize and prove ownership. All we can see is that the image is stored in a Photobucket account. Nice find, a metal detectionist dream actually...
:o Wisconsin ummm

Is that a silver dollar or a liberty dime? In either case, it is probably worth more than the meteorite. Nice collectables. Congrats on retirement. I did that in 2011 and have not regretted it. It takes a little getting use to, and I have enough on my 'Honey-do' list to keep me busy, so I doubt that you will be bored. Time for you to actually enjoy life.

Detectorists was a brilliant series, who would have thunk Mackenzie Crook was such a talented writer and director as well as actor?

It is a Silver Dollar sorry I didn't point that out. When my Mom died, we found 74 of those old suckers in her bank deposit box.
Our family had no idea she collected them. Each kid took one home and the rest I sold for $36 a piece

I was walking down the street when I saw a meteorite flying towards me. Just managed to catch it before it hit the queen/hospital/orphanage. Want to see it?

How do we know if we found a meteorite? How do we identify one?
I imagine color, its rough and smooth surfaces, weight and tunnels going to its core would be indicative of foreign matter. Would this be considered a meteorite?

Tell us ole, you have past and present experience. I believe I'm looking at one in this thread.
I believe I've seen a few in my childhood and adolescence years. No where near the size of the one you pictured. Mine were plum size and fit in my wee little palm.
I loved collecting rocks among other things (still do).

p.s. nice find on the silver dollars. A find like that can start you collecting coins yourself ;)
