Looks like the New York Police Dept have discovered what we all already know ....that the best way to get around an urban area is on a scooter.
Piaggio Beverley 300's I think.
Those of you with eagle eyes will see that I have just been to Carlos Bakery for some canolis.
So a treat for the eyes and also the tastebuds

I think most of them are BV200's (198cc). There's an occasional 250 or 300 in the photo.

Wikipedia has some nice pics in the same league:

I'm amazed. A police department with some sense. Sure, it looks nice when you see a cop on a Harley but these will get the job done just as well, look good and save money all the way around.

I wonder what the maintenance dependability on those scooters is. Nothing ruins the great scootering experience like having to put it in the shop every other day, like most Fiats use to be like.

How will it save money? Most if the cost of an organisation is in the staffiing. Lovely flim flam from beginning to end.

Scoots were all lined up at The New York Times building when I saw them a few months ago. I couldn't get close to them, traffic was insane that day. It did bring a big smile to my face though. 'Bout time New York, New York!

Cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, better mileage. Where is the flim flam there?

Exactly what I said in the post. Staffing is the major cost.

It's a publicity effort

Good publicity then.

Hi folks, khaosaming is right, on closer inspection, they do look like a mixture of different size models. I didn't look at the different headlight configurations.
I used to have a beverley 300, which was fairly good for speed and roadholding and reasonable storage under the seat. During the year and a half I had it, it was very reliable. Everything was fine until one day I found out that my emergency stop ability was better than the car behind !! The back end got quite a bit of damage and the car driver was uninsured. When it was eventually fixed, it never seemed the same though.

Nice. I think that the NYPD needs these in order to slip psat traffic and get to certain scenes. It seems like they get held up a lot of the time behind traffic and stuff.

the Pa state police were at Velocity cycles in Mechanicsburg, Pa this summer for a meeting. they had all their motorcycles there also. I was talking to one of the policeman (nice guy!) and he said you can sit on my bike if you want. I said that's ok, I have the 150 PCX over there and you can sit on it too, if you want. we both laughed.

I grow up in the city, NW corner of 36th and Lexington.
About the same time as Toody and Muldoon were cruising the Bronx in Car 54, o_O
Don't tell me you don't know Toody and Muldoon,
anyhow
the NYPD had a bunch of Vespas and possibly others.
They were painted green and white, same as patrol cars of the era.
When traffic was at a total stand still, they could run up on the sidewalk and just zip around it.
They were also used a lot in Central Park and for parades and that type of thing.
.
It's an off and on type of thing. Depends on the commissioner, the mayor, etc.
If they are smart, lots of scooters. If normal politicians, less scooters.

Yes, I love the City but I don't think I could ever move back.
I may make it there this summer, have family out on the Island.
