I have Win 10 on all three household laptops now and it is fine (actually I love it). Most issues folks have had are related to vendor drivers not being updated for 10. As for big brother monitoring that is built in to 10 you can shut most of that down and the automatic updates to Win 7 and 8.1 have installed most of the same stuff on the older versions at this point so there is no way out except for Linux that has big issues of its own for a mainstream user.
Being in IT for the last 35 years I have seen it all and have run most of the OS's - even if only in testing modes for a long time. We tried Apple and Linux for years (even IBM OS2 - lol) but they just aren't that great for most mainstream business users for various reasons although we allow both iPhones and Androids and even still BB's for business use. Unix or AIX is another story altogether and excellent business OS's but Windows still runs all but the largest business applications at most large companies according to the IT pollsters.
Windows 10 was by far the most stable release by Microsoft to date - mainly because of the number of testers and length of time it was tested. The compatibility tool they released, though, is not perfect in rooting out issues due to old or unsupported hardware. Windows supports way too many different hardware types to get them all.
The Edge (new browser) had a few issues out the door but they quickly squashed those bugs and it seems pretty stable. Just the upgrade from IE which was basically unsupported at the end to the Edge is worth the upgrade to 10 IMO. I run a plethora of applications and have had no issues. My laptop has a high-end NVidia graphics card and it does great. The user interface and the Edge are much snappier than in Windows 7 or 8.1 but I have an I7 chip and 8GB ram besides the graphics card upgrade and a hybrid drive. A friend put in one of the new SSD drives and his Win 10 boots in something like 7 seconds. I am itching to get one when the prices drop a bit.

I know the current basic Mac Mini is a hit, simple, easy and tiny. Windows computers are just cumbersome in comparison.
That said I will always use Windows, built this computer, and the one before it

I do some gaming, and until Linux has support for my library, I cannot see me moving, but fully understand others swapping OS's.

I built about a dozen computers trying to achieve my ultimate COD (and a few others) gamer a few years back. It was fun but I found myself chasing after the latest upgrades with graphics cards, liquid cooling, etc. It was another one of my hobbies that was a black hole for money. Windows was the only game in town for gaming compatibility (pun intended). Now we are all on PS4 at the moment. When the son and friends started going PS4 I was stuck.
If you use a GPS on your bike and create routes with Tyre like I do Windows is also your best option. We have a ride on Tuesday in the Ozarks that has over 100 waypoints.

Maybe, maybe not. Quite a lot of people are moving from Apple phones to Android simply because they are fed up with poor performance and issue with some models of Iphone (v5) and being tied into Apple and Itunes (more freedom on Android). Mac laptops are cool and a designers dream, but you pay for that privilidge and a time comes where 'why do you need to keep upgrading'.
Windows is not dead as long as most companies and home users use it - which isn't going to change anytime soon.

Not sure about 10 years but AI will replace these archaic OS's with stuff we can barely imagine.

I retired from a mega company that uses Windows computers. They buy Windows computers by the truckload, and upgrade existing ones by the thousands. As long as large corporations support Microsoft, Windows will exist. I believe that these large corporations are what is holding back computer/operating system changeover from Microsoft to other capable systems. Imagine Apple or even Linux being as user friendly AND having as inexpensive parts and software as Windows does now. The one thing that set Microsoft on a firm path toward the largest operating system provider in the world was the opening up of the hardware platform to external providers, thus allowing them to create hardware and software at competitive prices. Apple does not do that, and Linux is only now starting to make their systems easier to operate by the inexperienced user. As for Android, it is a Linux derivative...

Microsoft has a stranglehold on the business desktop PC market because of proprietary software and file types.
Look at devices other than desktop PCs/Laptops and Windows is absolutely nowhere to be seen.

I use (and support 100+ people) at work on Mac, Windows and Linux and like each for different things. Windows is always easy to use and great to tinker under the hood, Mac is easy to use but not so easy to tinker with, Linux is great for stability and when correct drivers for ad-hoc hardware is available but it's not so user-friendly and a pain to tinker compared to other OS's.
I run Windows and have no issues - my home PC has run stable since XP for many a year. The problem with Apple is greed (twice the price for everything and making poeple us Itunes and such for content), the problem with Windows are virus'es and people using dodgy torrents and NG's and such and install crap-ware (too much trojan crap and poor s/w from what used to be good repositories). Not such a problem if using open-source free s/w for Windows which now-a-days covers almost all apps from graphics, office, audio and more, much of which can be run as portable apps.
