I'm fairly sure no-one actually measures belt wear.
Just change it at the recommended interval and all will be well.

Absent that clairvoyance; keep a spare at hand.
This is terrible advice. I would change your belt at worse a few thousand miles past the service limit (every 15k miles).

I had an acquaintance insist that his belt was a lifetime belt. It broke at speed, locked up his rear tire when it got tangled in the clutch, and he dumped his scooter. Don't be dumb and wait for it to snap, replacing a belt every 15k miles is no big deal. :D
fun2scoot wrote:All good points. Here is one more:
If the bike is mostly ridden at or near top speed, then the sides of the belt could become slightly concave (relative to the circumference edges) from running on the circumference of the variator, making any measurement unreliable as the belt would have more wear than indicated.
This is all very good and true though. The more you run at top speed, the more important it is you change your belt at 15k instead of waiting until it pops.

GN2 is right as usual (as usual). This is my exact advise. Don't worry about it, and just change it at 15. 8)

The first sentence would be if it were intended as advice. It was not. The second sentence was modifying the first to show that no one can know when a belt would break and that we should keep a replacement handy.
I wrongly assumed that we all know to maintain our bikes according to the schedule and that qualifying this was unnecessary.
My apologies for the misunderstanding.

I misread, did not mean to offend at all. :) You're good to go, sorry if I came off as offensive. I saw "Drive belts should be replaced right before they break." and jumped at that statement.

LOL :) It's all good!
I love this forum; lots of experience here to help newbies, while they pass upwards what they learn (and remind us of our past hard knocks) ;)
