the beauty of a big horn
Exiting a Walmart parking lot today, I stand with my PCX ready to turn right. About 15 yards beyond there is a stop sign; therefore, as soon as I get my bike onto the service road I know that I will have to stop. I look to my left, see a white sedan coming on about 75 yards away. I get ready to pull out, thinking that the sedan is going to have to start slowing down for the stop sign thus giving me plenty of time to get out and stopped before it arrives behind me. Just as I am about to twist my wrist, the sedan barrels past me, blows through the stop and careens down the service road toward the highway. I lean and lean (so to speak) on my air horn to accompany her--it was a young woman--on her way. I am tempted to escort her a little way in the same attitude, but think better of it. No point being a complete asshole about it.
But that horn certainly felt good. I would recommend one to anyone. I mean, think of my chagrin (to use a nice word) if all I had to voice my ire had been the stock PCX horn? Instead of a raging bull, I would have been a bleating sheep.

Most of the time it's best to keep your hand off your horn.

Re: the beauty of a big horn
I got so tired of being ignored by the snobbish housewives with more important things to do than obey the law. I was constantly hitting my horn to no avail. I finally realized that they couldn't hear me with my little beep beep children's horn, so I bought a new air horn, and now I get to scare the hell out of those idiots who don't even know what a stop sign is... Sometimes they even wake up.

I don't honk when the honking might get me backed into, sideswiped, or t-boned by an irate motorist. In this case the object of my honk was in no position to hurt me. So I tried to further her education a little.you you wrote: Most of the time it's best to keep your hand off your horn.
I have found that a lot of people see a scooter and forget all about the rules. At 4 way stops they take your turn. They pass you in no pass zones. I've had them shout at me, a law-abidding scooterist, to "Get off the road!" Well, these days, when I can, I give these types a blast.

I hear this and applaud it. At least with an air-horn your outrage isn't turned into a comic interlude.Mel46 wrote:I got so tired of being ignored by the snobbish housewives with more important things to do than obey the law. Yep totally fake... look at Elvis impersonator/Police officer's hands and shoes. I could maybe see the boots if he was running in the desert just before pulling these guys over but did you ever know a cops (sergeant no less) hands to be that of an auto mechanics 2:12

Re: the beauty of a big horn
Everytime I hear a train horn I look around for the train, because I have a healthy respect for those huge moving death traps. Too many people, dogs, and other animals have been hit by those things, and they don't stop on a dime once they see you. This area has had a lot of vehicle - train collisions. Guess who won??!! I don't know how many times the Darwin Theory has been tested at railroad crossings. There was a case about a year ago in which the guy in a sports car went around the cross bars and did not get across in time as the train came barreling through. I can't remember what the outcome was for the driver but the car was pushed down the track about 100 yards and wasn't much of a car when it finally stopped. Many of the outlying areas do not have cross bars at the track and road intersect, so you have to be aware before crossing. So if I hear a train horn, I hit the brakes and start looking.

Trains can drag car wreckage a long way and there usually isn't a lot left.

must be why we never hear about bike vs train... it just becomes a missing persongn2 wrote:Trains can drag car wreckage a long way and there usually isn't a lot left.
Yesterdays train vs metra... very frequent and usually fatal phenomena in Chicagoland.
You get used to it, always someone willing to go around the gates.

Re: the beauty of a big horn
Again today I learned the beauty of having a big horn--this time it was a lesson tinged with a feeling of nostalgia and longing. I was on my new Burgman which has not yet been fitted with a real horn. I came to a 4 way stop. I plant my feet and wait while a black SUV takes its turn through the inter section. I get ready to launch--when a white SUV that was behind the black one, with a cursory glance in my direction, slides through taking my turn with him. I jump on my horn as he passes me. He looks over lazily at me and goes on his dunderheaded way. I turn into the intersection and follow behind him--I did not do this with the intention of getting in his face, we were both going in the same direction. After a few miles he turned into a parking lot. As I passed him I gave him another long bleat with my horn. I don't know if he heard it, but I'm pretty sure he was not much impressed if he did.

Re: the beauty of a big horn
Yesterday I was at a light, waiting in the turn lane for the light. I was turning left into my subdivision. The cars coming from my right had the green light. It was a 4 way intersection so the light changes in a clockwise direction. Thus, those turning left, like I was, and those going straight from the lanes beside me go together. The same with each set of lights. When the light changed to green for me the car behind me beeps his horn. I pull down my visor and start to go. Note that there was obviously a time eliminate there before I went, meaning the light to my right had been red for at least 5 seconds. I make it 4 feet into the intersection and suddenly two vehicles run the red light to my right and turn left in front of me. The car behind me almost rearends me and we all hit our horns at the same time. The front vehicle turning across us was a Hummer. The guy gives us the finger! THAT is the kind of attitudes we deal with every day in our area.

Re: the beauty of a big horn
There are various intersections in my town that I just avoid even though by using them I could considerably shorten my way; there is just too much going on in them, too easy for a guy on a scooter or mc to get nailed. One particularly hateful situation is approaching certain 4 lane highway intersections with intention to make a left turn, let's say, going north. The light is green but there is a car on the other side in the same attitude that I am, waiting to turn left going south. I am afraid to turn because I can't see clearly what is coming at me on the outside lane where the car waiting to turn is blocking my sight line...but I am reluctant to come to a dead stop because of the pressure of the traffic behind me. I have learned to just avoid that scenario altogether. Either I take another route or I forego my left turn (when there is traffic behind me) keep going straight and wait for a better oppotunity to make my move.Mel46 wrote:Yesterday I was at a light, waiting in the turn lane for the light. On my scooters I work hard to avoid left turns, period.
