Anyone use a magic jack? My home phone is past its promotional rate and all I use it for is to buzz in the occasional delivery guy... $25 bucks a month seems a little much for a landline that will only take incoming calls. Apparently magic jack is a USB device that allows you to plug in a normal phone over your internet connection. I believe it only costs $19 a year...
Anyone have one of know someone who uses one and is happy?
Thanks!

I only use my cell phone -- no landline, so I have no idea.
Have you considered using a Skype number as a landline?

Hmmmm. I didn't even think about that. Do they offer local area codes? The door buzzer only requirement for a telephone is that it has a 213 area code.

I'm not sure. You could also use Google Voice, it's free and will redirect to your cellphone.

I use Google Voice when I'm at my computer, I can call from Gmail.
Re: anyone have a magic jack? happy?
Well Magic Jack is a good product. Got it and for $20 a year, the phone service is great! Unfortunately, I don't really ever use a home phone and never really use my mobile minutes, so the home phone for me was a waste. Never renewed my subscription, but I think the product is great.

Is there any way to make it work without having it plugged into your computer?? We only have laptops and I don't like to leave them on all the time.
Re: anyone have a magic jack? happy?
Probably not, it uses your computer to make calls. Kinda like skype or other services like that.

Re: anyone have a magic jack? happy?
ya this is the only downside.... I guess if I was expecting someone or needed to make a phone call I could just turn the computer on. Google voice is a good option too. Guess I have some research to do =]
