Gas overfill and starting issues

Post by iyernat »

I posted this a couple of weeks back (based on knowledge I had at that time - see below) - however the same issue happened again yesterday. My son reported that he could not start the bike after he had run an errand and it was in a parking lot. Well he had no access to a power outlet to charge the battery (wrong assumption that battery was the issue). He went home and came back with a friend after a couple of hours and it started right away with no intervention.

The theory I have now that on both occasions this happened - we had filled gas and overfilled it to the point that it spills a bit out. This seems to cause an issue in starting until some of it evaporates from air-lines (maybe). This problem does not happen right away but the day after when about 10 or so miles have been put on after the fillup. I have instructed my son to fill until the pump stops and not overfill anymore.

Any comments would be welcome.

BTW - this happens on the 2021 PCX and have never had the issue on 2019 model.

I had an issue last week. My son had taken the scooter out just for 15 minutes and when he came back - left the lights on for about 10 minutes - but the scooter would make the cranking noise but would cut out as soon as I left the brake lever or the throttle. This persisted for about an hour of continuous trying and finally I got a battery red light. I was certain the original issue was not battery related as these lights are all LED, however I tried jumping the battery and nothing happened. Then I decided to use a 4 AMP Deltran battery charger to charge the battery. I left the battery charger for about 10 minutes and the Deltran machine stated that battery is fully charged. Viola - after that the scooter started without any issues. I wonder what happened!!!

Next morning I rode the scooter for 120 miles without any issues.

Please share your thoughts as to what could have happened. I hope the battery is fine as someone told me that you should not charge motorcycle batteries with anything over 2 AMPS.

Word of advice, get in the habit of NOT using the kill switch. Always use the key to turn off the bike. Prevents you from leaving the ignition (and lights) on and killing your battery. Get a new battery, That thing is cooked.

Overfilling the tank will have Zero effect on starting the bike. I would recommend getting a voltmeter and measure the voltage while you crank the bike.

Scooter batteries are notorious to be trash if they die even once. Put it on a tender overnight and measure voltage while cranking. If its dropping under 10v then that battery is done.

Can't say I've had that same issue, but I see where you're coming from. Maybe overfilling the gas is messing with things somehow? Who knows. Like you say, best to just stick to filling up til the pump stops next time. Bit strange that it doesn't cause issues right away, though. On a side note, yeah, leaving lights on and killing the battery is a common one we've all done at some point lol. Anyway, hope things work out and you get it sorted, man.
