Side stand - anyone extended it? (center stand issues now)

Post by iceman »

I've been using the center stand best part of four years now for parking at home and work, I just use the side stand when getting fuel. The past week, when raising the center stand, I've had to give the center stand a little push to get it to swing home.

I cannot lift the bike up yet, which would help with maintenance work and investigation for issues such as this. The center stand seems to move freely and the spring is complete and attached, so I wonder if the spring has just weakened over time along with some grime on the shaft.

I've tried using the side stand when parking in motorcycle parking bays in a city Q-Park underground car-park, but compared to other scooters and many motorcycles, the pcx seems to lean over far too much for my liking - easy to get knocked if others parked close and difficult to get to for the same reason. Thus, I wonder if it's wise to consider adding to the length of the side stand to help reduce the lean?

Certainly don't want the C-stand coming down on its own when in motion. You should make time to get this repaired, a 2015 should not have any C-stand issues like older models did. The side stand might be a little awkward but it will do the job. You have a safety issue which is more important you get after as soon as possible. Curious exactly what's causing this failure... please follow up.

Reluctant spring back of centre stand is a symptom of impending pivot seizure.
You need to extract the pivot pin, clean it off, grease it and re-insert it.
Both my PCX and Forza suffered from this fairly regularly.

Thanks all. I did try searching this forum and youtube / google for some guides, especially PCX wise for removal as I'm sure it's been discussed before, but could not find the info. Can anyone provide a link - think there are issues getting it off or back on or such - not sure which?

gn2's how-to lube center-stand :D http://www.hondapcx.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1344

I don't trust the side stand for lenthy time periods. On off bike for photo shoots, but not for shopping or restauranting  eating out. Up on the mid stand she goes.
Please get this sorted ice, I like reading about good stuff, happy stuff, we're All Safe Stuff ;)

2-28 of your service manual which is found in your PM. Pretty much what GM said.

I planned to do the work yesterday between shifts but alas other things came up. It needs doing but is far from stuck - once raised, if it's pressed to the ground it always flips up, and most times now since adding some light oil.
I have had a quick look and horrified by the amount of dirt/grime/other that's built up over almost 4 years of use.
What's the best way to get the spring off - pliers and grip and pull or lever in some way? (being old and had a hard life, I did not want to break it as no spare)

If you increase the length of the sidestand, and therefore reduce the lean, wont that increase the chances of the bike toppling over?

Wait! I found this clever bit on youtube!
Fetch some coin of equal value (or you can use washers of equal size) then give this a go:

Before you go taking things apart, take it to a coin operated spray wash place and hit it with the spray wand and the wash mix, then rinse. I'll bet you find out that it's Road grunge......

The centre stand spring can be left in place while you knock the pivot pin out.
No need to take the spring off first.

Yep, I expect thick road gunge and crud, some was wiping off when I took a look but lots to clear off.
WN, thanks, GN2 - thanks, I noticed you left that out of your guide but the 1st thing the SM states is to take the spring off so I tried - and failed as it seemed to be on tight and I thought I would snap it if I forced things. May get a new spring and stand at some point - spring is about £10 and stand normally best part of £60!
