Well as I suspected, the kill switch was the culprit. Swapped in a new one and everything worked as expected. You do have to take the kill switch housing apart to get to the switch but it was a five minute job. I replaced the air cleaner, the rear brake shoes and front pads, put on new tires and was...

Yup agreed, it got a new battery and a bath. Still think the switch is iffy, should be here this week and I'll find out
