2019 PCX150 600-mile valve clearances

Post by zroger73 »

My PCX passed 600 miles recently so I decided to check the valve clearances.

The intake was 0.003" (on the tight side of the spec which is 0.003" to 0.005").
The exhaust was 0.007" (too tight - the spec is 0.008" to 0.010").

I ran out of time last night, but I plan to adjust the valves to 0.004" and 0.009" this evening.

Disassembly was relatively easy until I got to the "body cover" which I found to be very difficult to remove - it didn't want to slide up and back like it's supposed to even after following the service manual precisely. It finally yielded after about an hour without any obvious damage.

Up to this point, the instructions had not yet instructed me to remove the "luggage box". There were still more steps to go, but I stopped reading the service manual and removed the luggage box and "maintenance cover" on my own which gave me enough access to perform the valve clearance inspection/adjustment. I found it frustrating that the service manual constantly had me flipping through various sections in "random" order rather than a sequential, step-by-step procedure. Still, the service manual is a must.

If the valves are too loose (too much clearance), they can be noisy.

If the valves are too tight (too little clearance), they can burn.

If they're too loose or too tight, the engine may not run smoothly and be down on power or fuel economy.

Congratulations! it's GREAT seeing more of you boys doing your own maintenance recently. Don't be frustrated and yes put your valve clearance into spec.

I agree the SM gets lost when it comes to the luggage box section and I did exactly the same thing you did by removing it as soon as I could.

I assume you refer to the lifting and pulling back of both body panels and tail light assembly? Two rubber grommets that are visible will indeed need to be lifted over and cleared before the body panels will pull back in that section and it can be a little awkward if anything like the 2015-17 models.

Mind your seat hinge bolts in the battery box on reassembly, they are easily pushed back and fall into the chassis when re-attaching the part. Put some tape on the back side of the bolts before re-installing. This tip may or may not apply on the 2019 wish I knew for sure sorry.

One of you guys should do a complete video walk thru VCAdjustment for the new models.

I watched the YouTube video demonstrating valve clearance adjustment on the 2015 (which I assume also applies to the 2014 and possibly 2011-2013?).

A couple of differences I noted are:

1. The two bolts you mentioned and that can be seen on the YouTube video do not apply to the 2019.
2. The battery box doesn't need to be removed for the 2019.
3. It's not necessary to remove the fuel line on the 2019.

I suspect there are more differences between the 2019 and previous years, but this is only my first valve inspection on my 2019. My 2018 already had its 600-mile service done just before I bought it. I have a suspicion that the procedure on the 2019 is a bit easier based on what I'm reading and seeing.

I started to do a video for the 2019, but I knew I'd be fumbling through it the first time and didn't want to spend ten times longer editing a video than the already lengthy amount of time it took to perform the procedure. Maybe next time. :)

I'm headed to the dealer after work to pick up a quart of HP4M and a tube of HondaBond HT.

You know I'm late to this party but WOW! YES someone has managed to get to the valve clearance adjustment on the old models without following the SM at all. That's truly ingenious and certainly we want TO DO THAT! over taking all the plastic off. Do my eyes deceive me? Is this real? is that an LED PCX?

***NOTICE***

After spending several hours disassembling and reassembling my 2019 PCX the past few days to inspect and adjust the valve clearance now that I've passed 600 miles, I just learned that the interval has increased on the 2019 PCX to every 4,000 miles instead of 600 miles and every 2,500 miles like the 2018 and prior year models. This revised interval is reflected in the maintenance schedule in both the owner's and service manuals, which I did not see until after I had finished the job.

Oh, well. At least the 4,000-mile inspection will go more quickly and I did find that the exhaust valve was out of spec. :)
