Insurance says they're going to total the scoot

Post by Eiron »

:x
The adjuster said that replacement panels and parts tallied up to more than $2,600 so they're not going to fix anything. Apparently, they'll only replace parts that are only cosmetically damaged rather than simply touch them up. I haven't heard yet what they're going to offer for a settlement amount.

Was there any frame damage? Sounds like you could possibly buy it back and get your own panels for it.

I hit the ground pretty hard. Without taking the panels off I don't know if I could tell. I rode it the 12 miles home immediately following the accident but I wasn't focused on how it was riding, and with my broken hand I won't be able to test-ride for another 6 weeks at least.

I'll look into the prices of panels to see what my own costs might be. If cost dictates that I have to buy used panels (after buying back the bike) I have no idea how difficult it might be to find them in my color.

Poop! :x

You may be right in not knowing if there is frame damage, but I suspect that if you could ride it home that the frame is fine. Still, it is up to you as to which direction you choose to go.
If you have never taken a PCX apart it could be a challenge, especially with a broken hand.

After we had our accident the insurance company was on the border as to whether to total them or not. I convinced them to not and to let me find a repair shop. Of course, since I have taken these bikes apart many times I just took them to my basement, stripped them down, ordered replacement parts, checked the frame, and fixed them myself for one third of what a shop would charge. Easy enough to do when you use an online parts place such as www.partzilla.com

If they offer a reasonable payout use it as a deposit on a new one.
Don't waste your time, effort and money rebuilding.

A rebuilt write off will be near impossible to sell on later.
Its scrap now, it will be still be scrap but with new parts on after a rebuild.

 Probably! I was thinking I might go "back to the future" with the new 2019 Super Cub 125 because it was my first scoot (1980, 70cc, 3-spd semi-auto, 16" wheels, 40-45mph max, front/rear racks, 2-person seat). I'm nostalgic for the styling and fantastic ride of the large diameter 17" wheels. But, realistically, there are a few things that I'd have to give up:
1) top speed - only 55 mph, won't keep up with traffic on connecting roads
2) limited range - 1 gallon tank, constant refilling
3) non-existent storage
4) no racks and/or mounts for installing a top box
5) single seat
Add in the things I didn't like when I owned my earlier model (constant need to lube the drive chain and sprockets inside the chain case, possible shared sump (as on original) for engine and transmission, weak suspension, weak lighting), and I know I wouldn't be happy.
And yes, I know the suspension and lighting would be updated in the new model. ;)

Yeah, I was thinking the same (about the frame). I've taken it apart far enough to check the valves, add the Honda tall windscreen, and wire in the Shad auxiliary brake light, so I think I've had just about every panel off the bike at one time or another? But as you say, now with a broken hand ....

I've been thinking about this side of the coin, too. When I was younger I viewed my time as less valuable. Now, however.... :| Add in the "salvage" title and, overall, it may not be worth my time and labor in the long run. I'll know better once I get the payout amount.

If they total it,you probably will get screwed, but there is always hope.Unless you have replacement value provision in your policy expect to get a depreciated figure based on years and miles.Good luck!

It's not automatically a salvage title in CO especially if it's paid off. Plus, even if it does get 'Salvaged' there's still things like a Ruckus swap to consider ;)

What is meant by that is to install the engine out the PCX in a Honda Ruckus.

Ah, gotcha.
Nah, I wouldn't choose to ride a Ruckus, even with a 150cc engine.

I think I've seen them get up to 75 with a GY6 engine (generic 150) on youtube, but I don't know if I'd want to ride one either (although I said the same about scooters in general).

Eiron - let me know if you need help with anything if you decide to fix it up or to help get the variator, etc off if you let them have it. I'm south of Denver, so like an hour from you.

Thanks Cube! I'm waiting for the payout determination from insurance before I remove anything. My policy has "add-on accessories" coverage that's supposed to pay for the things I've added, but there'll be some depreciation so it may - or may not - make sense to remove them from the claim.

Well, looks like I'll be helping with a similar problem, the GF laid down her Silver Wing tonight. She was wearing most of her gear so just bruises and some rash. Like yours it was low speed. Only 3 body panels unscathed, but I got it started and rode it home after I got the GF home.

It is easy enough to drop a Silver Wing. They are somewhat bigger than a PCX, and unless you are aware of the difference in weight distribution between the SW and a motorcycle you could be caught off guard, especially coming to a stop on a corner.

Mostly. However, it came down hard on the left floorboard and that transferred to the right side floorboard hard enough to break all the tabs on it and the right front plastics. Headlight's gone too. It's pretty much the same layout as the PCX. Undamaged are windscreen, windscreen cover, right rear and center rear panels. everything else is cracked or rashed.

How did your insurance experience work out?

For us, 3 weeks later and we're still trying to get a final estimate from the dealer. Had a chat with the GM yesterday so expect some results Monday. In the meantime, I'm picking up a Reflex this week from a guy in Loveland.. hoping the lighter bike will help her and she can get more saddle time before going back to the s'wing.

I'm still trying to get things finalized.

They covered the accessories but forgot the safety gear, so that's supposed to be taken care of shortly.

I took the PCX up to Interstate Honda in Fort Collins (the local Honda Powersports dealer) for a post-crash safety inspection. They said the only frame/fork item was a slightly bent (1/8") left handlebar stop. They said it wasn't a structural item (no need to fix) and everything else was cosmetic damage. I just let the insurance company know today that I want to keep the scoot, so hopefully I'll receive a payout within a week or so.

Let me know what day you're coming up to Loveland and I'll meet you for a beer! 8)
