Hi everyone... NCY Variator kit?

Post by Rain »

G'day mates.

I'm the owner of a new 2018 PCX 150 here in Australia.

I'm trying to obtain a NCY variator kit for my scoot but it's difficult to get them here in Oz.

Anyone know where/how I can obtain the kit please?

I would be ok with sending the money for it to a member if they could ship it to me here in AU.

Thanks, Rain.

Got mine off ebay from Taiwan, did you try that?
Also get the NCY 13g rollers but check first, the 13g work perfectly with 2013-2016 for sure

I can tell you where to get it in the United States, but I understand that it is difficult to get, if not impossible, there in Australia.
You can check with them. They do ship internationally, but they have strict rules, so go to their site and look up International shipping. https://www.corsportusa.com/ft-5-international.html

Here is the link to all of the parts you will need...variator, drive face, 13 gram rollers. (Yes, they fit all years.)

Hi all, I've seen posts about both 13gr and 15gr rollers with the NCY variator kit. Can you comment on these 2 weights and which would be preferred for different situations. I'm 165lb and ride solo on hilly secondary roads, averaging 35 - 60 mph.

Also, with only 1,500m on my 2018 150's odometer, am I correct that I should stay with the original belt?

Thank you.

Tried both the 13 in the 15 with my ncy kit, , the 13 works much better, better overall performance from take off to high speed. Using original belt. This is a 15 150 pcx.

I believe the consensus of everyone who has the kit prefers the 13 gram rollers. Some who do Not Have the kit installed prefer the 15 gram, for some reason unknown to me.

By the way, in answer to your question concerning using the original belt, if it has less then 3,000 miles on the belt go ahead and use the original belt. (The less miles on the belt the better the belt performs.)
There was once a discussion about using a Datona Reenforced belt, but something has changed in their manufacture process and some of their belts have failed prematurely.
Now I would say please use a known Honda belt. Just check them ever so often when you do normal maintenance. If your book says to check it, then do so.

What sort of impact does the kit have on MPG?

It obviously depends on how you ride. If you are an aggressive rider and ride with it Wide open a lot you will see a drop in mpg, but I suspect that you would even without the kit. The advantage of the kit is extra ump when needed. If you ride conservative most of the time your mpg should not drop by much. I have not seen much, if any change in mine under most riding conditions. There are times when I can't help but open my throttle and let it run for a short distance, like climbing a hill.

My latest fill up gave me 92 mpg. Most of my riding is around town, so I am sure that is not much different from normal.

I've been consistently over 100mpg on mine since I bought it but I would be willing to lose some of that to get the other benefits.

I have not taken mine out on a back road trip yet to test the mpg with the kit installed, but my wife's PCX has had the kit for a while and we have not noticed much difference in mpg between our two bikes.

Cube, what altitude are you at? (Loveland is right around 5,000 ft) Mel's spot-on about riding style. I do mostly commuting and errands on my 2015 and average around 115 mpg, with winter lows around 110 mpg and summer highs around 120 mpg. I have the Yuminashi kit, the Honda OEM tall windscreen, the Shad SH39 top box, and have been running Mobil 1 15W-50 in both the engine and final drive. I'd imagine similar mpg results with the NCY kit.

I'm south Denver metro, so about 5600 feet. Similar screen, no top box at the moment and guessing Honda GN4 for oil since I let them do the 600 mile change. It's hilly east of me (my commute route) but I'm not a speed demon anymore (Kawi ZX6 and ZX11 took care of that itch years ago). I'm not overly worried about an MPG decrease unless it was going to drop into the 80s or worse with the new variator and weights but I like to know what to expect.

I wouldn't expect you to see any decrease in your mpg unless the extra "oomph" of the kit invites you to become more heavy-handed on the throttle. If you're a moderate rider you might even see a slight mpg increase as the engine breaks in. I bought mine used with 3,000 mi already on it, so I expected a slight mpg decrease when I added the kit, top box, and switched to heavier oil. I try to hold my max speed to 45 mph if possible but my routes frequently have me riding 55-60 to stay with traffic, and occasional runs up to 70+ do happen.

Well, I got the NCY variator and the 13 gram roller weights installed.

Easy job, no problems.

I've tested the scooter on local around town trips and also on the expressway. The lighter weights do the trick alright, a general improvement right across the performance range.

I visited the NCY shop online and saw how the guy was using Dr Pulley sliders instead of their own NCY rollers. I found that very interesting.... So I ordered a set of 13gram Dr Pulley sliders to test out.

As soon as they arrive here I will fit them and run another test to see if they work.

I also ordered a complete NCY kit including the clutch etc. to try out.

I need to obtain a set of bearings for the stock clutch as mine were a bit noisy from new, so I re-greased them but I suspect that the bearings inside are already on the way out.

The stories about the PCY being a mechanic's nightmare are more than a little true, i've found. It is a real bugger to work on with all those restrictive plastic panels to remove.

I cop a fair bit of flack from my riding mates for not being on a sports bike, but the PCX is a sweet cruising and riding machine, so I'm happy with it so far.

A word of caution on the Dr. Pulley Sliders and the NCY variator.

It has been mentioned more than a few times on here that the Sliders will screw up the Teflon coating on the NCY variator, which will cause some problems down the road since they will no longer be working on a smooth surface. Just a heads up.

There have also been tests with Dr. Pulley Sliders and other types of variators. Even with the original OEM variator the bike is quicker off the line with sliders, which is what they are suppose to do.

For those who can not get the NCY variator I suggest that they try a different brand plus sliders, but I still think that the NCY setup (variator, drive face and rollers) is the best bang for the buck since you will improve both ends of your speed.
