Early rides can be like a spiritual event. . ..
I can see your deciduous trees aren't blooming yet either.

As usual, you take some really nice pictures. Imagine what you could do if you lived here where it is sunny and green. :-)
Here are some recent pictures of the town square in our "little" town. Don't let the pictures fool you. The courthouse and many of the law offices are in some of the buildings around the square...but so are coffee shops, little restaurants, and all sorts of little shops. They have worked hard to try to make the square a place families would want to spend time in.
Marietta has been in existence since before the Civil War.

Nice pic Mel. . .reminds me a bit of Greensboro.
Speaking of Civil War I visited Andersonville once. Also had a dinner in Madison, GA. Glad that town didn't get leveled on Sherman's March to the Sea.

Same with Marietta. There was a big battle at Kennesaw Mountain and I think Sherman went around the town. However Kennesaw, which is the town right next door to Marrietta, played a famous part in that war. The Great Locomotive Chase started there. The locomotive, "The General", is parked up there still.
Georgia is heavy into Civil War memories, so you can guess what an uproar it has been with certain groups wanting to destroy any and all statues, etc that remind them that there ever was a Civil War. To Southerners that would be like telling everyone up north that any memory of the Revolutionary War needs to be removed. Just because we don't agree with what a war stood for does not mean that all traces of that war should be removed. They are a reminder of something terrible and costly that did happen, and which we do not want to happen again.

As it has been said by victims of human malice. . ."Forgive, but never forget".
If we learn from our history and move forward in ways that add value to persons, places, and things then that is a good thing. But if we continue to repeat the mistakes of the past then that is tragic. May our better angels prevail. . .. Their work is certainly cut out for them.
