Rusty Handlebar stem!

So, When I bought the PCX, the Handlebar stem has just a tiny crack like line in it, which I obviously ignored.
But after about 10 months of use, the crack has grown, and it worries me.

I am located on an area surrounded by Sea. Its either dusty or muddy on roads which requires a wash (with water) about every month.
Do you guys have any suggestions to eliminate the problem or contain the problem without further damage. Will this spread to other aluminum parts if left as it is?

Here is a picture of the current situation.

My eyes aren't what they once were ..... is the crack horizontal, on the side just below the very top of the clamp - below where the plastic caps hide the holes were the mounting bolts go ?

Struggling to see what the issue is :) - besides surface marking, not sure there is a problem but I must be missing it.

Would you be so kind as to retouch the photo with a circle around the area in question or put a line pointing from where the crack starts and where it ends? I can clearly see the corrosion but the crack you are talking about is not clear. If it were me and it is indeed a crack I'd get it to a dealer and have them inspect it for safety reasons. Also if they've had similar reports from other people then Honda would certainly want to know about it. Safety first! :geek:

sorry about the confusion regarding "the crack LIKE line". I was actually referring to the corrosion surface markings.

Has it spread to the actual handle bar itself, or is it just the clamp? (I can't tell from the photo - I can't be sure that I'm not just looking at a reflection in the chrome).

It's just the lacquer marking up as aluminium oxide builds up underneath it.

The most minor of cosmetic corrosion. Don't worry about it.

SHOCK! get those off immediately and take them to the buffer. Aluminum does not need a clear coat when on an open, clean and polished surface. We shall have none of that! :o

Apply ACF-50 to metal parts of your scooter to prevent further corrosion.
Read about it....motorcycles youtube.

I would buy new bar clamps then use ACF-50. Watch a few you tube video's as member fish suggested - learn how, and where to apply ;)

Agree with You You on this - very minor marking of the outer lacquer or coating on the sides - does not seem to be on the top and the bolts and pressure surface holding the bar on looks fine. Replace or deal with if it bothers you, other than that it seems to be a minor cosmetic issue at best. Basically cheap made to a price Honda bits, but the structural integrity seems to be fine. Your choice to replace.

Thanks WN... here it is on Amazon. I don't want a clear coat on anything but maybe this is different. I need a couple places to test this product outside this winter... got any ideas? Not ready to spray down a bike without seeing for myself how to get it off for the exact reasons we see on this poor fellows handlebar clamps.

I wouldn't worry about it's it's just a light oil.

It is good stuff.
