What is this?

My father-in-law gave us our 2013 PCX earlier this year. We love it. We love it so much the wife wanted her own. So, we just found a used 2016 locally and bought it yesterday. There is what appears to be a rheostat affixed near the gas tank. Any idea what this is for or why someone installed it? (Trying to post a picture, but am having trouble.)

Interesting! No that has been added and now the fun begins
Looks like a wire has been pulled through the console? Is that correct?

I will vote it's a button, toggle or switch... Please push it and see what happens :D

Is there a parachute attached the bike somewhere? May it is the ejection button. o_O ;)

That "is" odd. Do we get to see a different angle?
In the meantime, I'll hang my hat up ;)

Is it a button AND a rheostat? Any extra lights on the bike? Follow the wires.

Come on!
Maybe the previous owner got tired of locking his key under the seat and hot wired the luggage release. Or it's hazard lights for us Americans who don't get them with our version.

To follow that wire Mel would be very difficult. You would have to tear down body panels which are the most difficult to get off and back on. I would do it... but he may not be willing.

I just knew one of you guys would know right off the bat.

It is a dial-type button. I'm having the dealer do the 5k service on it before taking possession so I can't trace the wire just yet. At the dealer, I push and pulled on it, but nothing appeared to happen. No parachute, no lights, no sounds. I think the PO disconnected whatever operated it.

It is odd. My best guess was maybe a light bar or something. Maybe a radio. Not obvious either way.

Good SHOW!
Unless it does something really useful for YOU I would disable it by removing and try to extract the wire completely but if not certainly pull the rubber wire coatings back cut the copper and stretch the rubber back over the copper shove it in the hole going after the rest of it another day. Why? because it defeats your ability to have a tank bag, and it's only a matter of time before you knock it loose if you step through and don't use a tank bag... it's just in a bad location. Perhaps with a little advise from members on cosmetic repair one could make the hole go away too. Swapping out that panel is cheap but requires homie like panel dismantling expertise LOL.

The picture was taken at the dealer so I'm not sure what bike is in the background.

I wondered about kicking it as well and preventing a tank bag from fitting well in that space. I'm still hoping it provides passage to a secret scooter power though.

Can you get a Sticker in glitter silver? Or just silver? If not, then I would choose Black over the white.

Ok... Mystery solved.

I had the service tech take a look around the wiring. It led to a wiring harness (relay) that appears to have managed some type of light bar. Go figure.
