Air box, Snorkel?
Hi everybody :-)
I've heard some things about getting a bit deeper sound from removing the snorkel in the air box.
I was wondering, is this marked spot in this picture, the snorkel, and should i just take it off?

Thanks in advance

Re: Air box, Snorkel?
the snorkel is on the outside of the box. i.e. installed in the part what is in your hand.
the tube marked on the picture is the end of the harmonic length intake pipe with the other end on the throttle body.

The wise rider will leave that system intact. It's a well-engineered SYSTEM.

Ah, on the opposite site and outside the box. Thanks Oyabun!
I dont doubt that the PCX is well engineered, but that wasnt my question :-)

Remove the snorkel. There is no change in power only in sound...and it's better. It replaces the clicker you click crap from the rollers etc.
As far as engineering of these boxes etc here in Thailand nearly every bike be it a click or fino has exactly the same setup air box from 100cc to 150cc. They are a very cheap choice in my opinion and just reused parts from a 1000 other bikes. When you take everything apart and look at it in all its glory..... It's not the greatest bit of kit... It's good. In today's scoot market good is enough for me...is up to us to make it better.

You might want to try this option. It gives it more of a throaty sound, particularly if you open the throttle up. I have had it on for a few years, and I like it.

That looks very nice! Will take a look at it.kramnala58 wrote:You might want to try this option. It gives it more of a throaty sound, particularly if you open the throttle up. I have had it on for a few years, and I like it.
I suppose the filter on the image shown can be used when raining too? ;-)

I dont have to open the airbox right?
But the only rubber snorkel thing i can find, is from the injection and into the airbox.

Re: Air box, Snorkel?
I took mine out to try it and the air filter got very dirty very quickly. There was alot more muck lying in the bottom of the airbox than is normal so I put it back in.

Thanks for the Input! Will keep that in mind.
But I see you live in Edinburgh :-) the chances for dirt is proberbly higher than it is in Southern Spain, with 300+ sunny days a year.

Riding in the rain is not a problem, although I seldom do it.Fugu wrote:I suppose the filter on the image shown can be used when raining too? ;-)

Re: Air box, Snorkel?
I removed the outer snorkel AND the spark arrester today, and couldn't perceive any difference in note or power.
If I was to clutch at straws, maybe the response was a little more brisk over 50% throttle input? But that's where its at its best anyhow, so it's really hard to say...

Re: Air box, Snorkel?
The snorkel removal will change the sound...there will be extra dirt but filter clean in a 5 min job.
The after market air boxes suck in way to much air for the pcx and loose power from low to high revs as well as making it a little hotter in the pipes.
Lost 5 to 7 km with the aftermarket filters so returned to the snorkel mod. They suck in a lot of air with power....including rain and whatever else you throw in there. Very hard to service.

Re: Air box, Snorkel?
You're right. I put my stock exhaust back on for a week and the sound from the snorkel removal was very noticeable.St.Clair wrote:The snorkel removal will change the sound...
It wasn't a nice sound and I couldn't notice any performance difference, so I put the snorkel back in today.

Anyone with a decent picture to show what i need to remove?

It's in the outer half of the airbox that you unscrew.
Remove the air filter and it's right there. It just slides on and off.

Thank you so much for this :-) Will look at it when I'm off work.
Do i need to pull out the battery for 5 minutes, so the ECU can remap or something?
Re: Air box, Snorkel?
You can try, it won't hurt after all. Definitely reset the ECU when changing the exhaust, though.

Re: Air box, Snorkel?
Hopefully this is even more useful (apart from the Slavic).
From 1:25 you can see the snorkel before he fits the filter.
