crash!!

Post by Mel46 »

Well I am sitting here waiting for a friend to pick us up. We just came from a multi car crash in which one vehicle ended up in a ditch after a head on crash. We both laid our bikes down at 45 mph. What a spill. I had my gear on but still got injured a little. My wife only had her vest on and long sleeve shirt. Her shoulder is disconnected or broken. The bikes are a mess. I think I have a broken wrist, but otherwise my gear saved me. I rolled about 40 yards on the road. My jeans lost out but otherwise I was saved by a great helmet and my Tourmaster jacket. I can't say enough for it. It was great.

Sorry to hear this. I hope you both make a quick recovery!

Who's idea was it to make road surfaces so damn uncomfortable to fall on?!

Would you believe that as I was sliding and rolling there was this song that kept going through my head. I can't recall it right now but it has the words 'rollin" down the highway'

I think that was a Bob Seger song.

Sorry to hear this - yikes, both of you hurt. Hope your wrist and your wifes shoulder heal without complications - when you mentioned what she was wearing I expected worse - always worries me when people do not wear much protection but travel at fast speeds.
I wear my armoured textile jacket but doubt it's as good as the really expensive ones (and I have no back armour fitted). I took the knee armour out of my textile trousers as it never sat in the right place. I was contemplating adjustable straps to wear on the outside of the trousers just below the knee to hold the armour in place, but so far not done it.

Not good, Mel! Especially that both of you were involved. I expect a pretty long recovery - take care of each other. As Iceman said, your wife's lack of gear was a scary intro. I have a bit of the same deal here - wife has a jacket and wears gloves (and helmet, obviously in MA), but does not want to invest in pants just yet. We ride 2 up, so if there is an incident, I expect she will fare worse than I will.

Best wishes and prayers for a complete recovery.
On my scoot, getting there is WAY more than half the fun!

I would like to analyze the crash whenever you get to a point where you feel like talking about it.

Mel, it is good to crash every now and then; it shows your friends how tough you are. I watch the YouTube videos of scooter crashes.... almost everyone lays their bike down when a crash is imminent. I have read numerous articles in motorcycle magazines that tell a rider not to "lay down" the bike. It seems to be human nature to do it.

I wonder if the correct approach (if you have 2 seconds to make the decision) is to rise up (almost standing) before impact. Cars just barely see me when i am riding; altho wearing a High Viz top helps a little. People are anxious to pull out when they come to a Stop Sign before a busy road. They tap their brakes and go..... which is when they finally see me. Would i get thrown over the handlebars if i hit them while standing on the footrest? Or break both of my legs? If i lay the bike down, i will be headed for their wheels.

Yak I wont subscribe to your "it's good to crash now and then" philosophy but I wish there were some crash dummy videos of motorcycle front end collisions. It would be helpful to assume some position just prior to impact since there is all that skid time. I'm sure laying it down is better that going over the high side at lower speeds but at higher speeds my choice would NOT be deceleration trauma over broken bones. Yes, I would be looking for a way over the car. In the minds slow motion and clarity of thought whilst skidding into obstruction I too would choose to fly over the hood, trunk or even the roof if possible. I have been in desperate situations before and know of this moment of clarity.

Nope, the correct approach is to buy a scooter with ABS so you can ram the brakes on as hard as possible, staying upright and in full control.
Four decades on two wheels has taught me nothing, all advice given is guaranteed to be wrong
